Housed dairy calves aged 3–8 weeks have recurrent pneumonia. The shed is humid, smells of ammonia and has no air inlets at eave level. What is the primary intervention?
B. Improve ventilation through inlets and outlets without creating draughts at calf level
Bovine respiratory disease in housed calves is driven by poor air quality and humidity; adequate ventilation with a stack effect, avoiding draughts at calf height, is the main control. Routine monthly antimicrobials are poor stewardship; higher density worsens air quality.
What is the recommended management of newly purchased cattle arriving on a farm?
B. Isolation for three to four weeks, without shared air space or drainage, while tests are completed
Quarantine lets disease incubate and tests be completed before the animals mix. Calves are the most susceptible group, not the most immune, and antimicrobials do not remove viral or chronic infections.
A broiler flock has 96% liveability, 2.4 kg average live weight at 38 days and an FCR of 1.6. What is its European Production Efficiency Factor, (liveability % × live weight kg) ÷ (age d × FCR) × 100?
C. About 379
EPEF = (96 × 2.4) ÷ (38 × 1.6) × 100 = 230.4 ÷ 60.8 × 100 = 379. Omitting the ×100 gives 3.8; leaving out FCR gives about 606 (230.4 ÷ 38 × 100); leaving out age gives 144 (230.4 ÷ 1.6).
A sow unit averages 12.5 pigs born alive and 11.0 pigs weaned per litter. What is the pre-weaning mortality?
D. 12%
Pre-weaning mortality = (12.5 − 11.0) ÷ 12.5 = 1.5 ÷ 12.5 = 12%. Dividing by pigs weaned (11.0) gives 13.6%; 88% is survival; 1.5% confuses pigs with percent.
What is the main herd-health benefit of all-in/all-out management of pig rooms?
D. Emptying, cleaning and resting rooms between batches breaks the cycle of infection from older to younger pigs
Moving whole batches in and out, with cleaning and disinfection between, prevents continuous transmission between age groups. Mixing ages spreads disease; it does not replace vaccination.
A sow herd has late-term abortions, increased stillbirths and weak-born piglets, and nursery pigs have respiratory disease. Which virus is the leading suspect?
C. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus
PRRS causes reproductive failure in sows (late abortion, stillbirths, weak piglets) and respiratory disease in growing pigs. Parvovirus mainly causes mummification in gilts without sow illness or nursery respiratory disease.
In a broiler flock, first-week mortality is 2.5%, well above the company target. Where should the investigation focus first?
C. Chick quality from the hatchery and brooding conditions: temperature, water, feed access and litter
First-week mortality reflects hatchery and breeder factors (yolk sac infection, chick quality) and brooding management. Marek's disease and coccidiosis cause losses later.
The FAMACHA system is used to guide targeted treatment for which parasite?
A. Haemonchus contortus
FAMACHA scores anaemia by the colour of the lower eyelid conjunctiva, so it detects blood-feeding Haemonchus. Nematodirus causes diarrhoea without anaemia; liver fluke also causes anaemia but FAMACHA was designed and validated for Haemonchus.
On the five-category FAMACHA chart, which animals are usually treated?
D. Those scoring 4 or 5 (pale to white), sometimes also 3
Scores run from 1 (red, not anaemic) to 5 (white, severely anaemic). Treating only anaemic animals leaves untreated worms in refugia, slowing resistance.
Which pig herd KPI is calculated as sows farrowing divided by sows served?
C. Farrowing rate
Farrowing rate = sows that farrow ÷ sows served in the corresponding period. Non-productive days count days a sow is neither pregnant nor lactating.
