A sow herd has a 115-day gestation, 26-day lactation and 6-day wean-to-service interval, and weans 11.5 pigs per litter. What is the maximum pigs weaned per sow per year?
About 23.0
About 28.6
About 36.5
About 29.8
Answer and working
B. About 28.6
Cycle = 115 + 26 + 6 = 147 days; litters/sow/year = 365 ÷ 147 = 2.48; × 11.5 = 28.6. 23.0 assumes two litters a year; 29.8 leaves out the wean-to-service interval (365 ÷ 141 × 11.5); 36.5 counts gestation only (365 ÷ 115 × 11.5).

A herd reports an average days open of 110 calculated only from cows that became pregnant. Why might this understate the herd's fertility problem?
Pregnant cows always have longer days open than open cows, so the bias works the other way
Days open always includes the dry period, which makes it larger, not smaller, than it should be
Days open is calculated from service dates, which are always recorded too late by staff
Cows that never conceived and were culled are excluded, so the worst performers leave the index
Answer and working
D. Cows that never conceived and were culled are excluded, so the worst performers leave the index
Indices based only on animals with an event (conception) suffer from selection bias: non-pregnant cows culled for infertility are removed. Survival-type measures such as the proportion pregnant by 150 days in milk include them.

When should a herd health intervention be evaluated with net present value rather than a simple one-year partial budget?
When costs and benefits fall in different years, as in eradication or heifer rearing investments
When the intervention is required by law, since discounting applies only to legal measures
Only when the farm is making a loss, since profitable farms never need to discount future money
When the intervention costs less than a single visit and benefits arrive the same month
Answer and working
A. When costs and benefits fall in different years, as in eradication or heifer rearing investments
Money received in future years is worth less than money now, so multi-year projects need discounting to present value. A one-year budget suits interventions whose effects fall within the year.

In a temperate sheep flock, lambs aged 6–10 weeks develop sudden severe diarrhoea in late spring before faecal egg counts rise. Which parasite best explains this?
Nematodirus battus, after a mass hatch of larvae triggered by a cold spell then warmth
Fasciola hepatica, which causes acute diarrhoea in young lambs in late spring
Teladorsagia circumcincta, which hatches only once a year after the winter frost has passed
Haemonchus contortus, which causes profuse diarrhoea with high egg counts in lambs
Answer and working
A. Nematodirus battus, after a mass hatch of larvae triggered by a cold spell then warmth
N. battus eggs hatch en masse after chilling followed by warm weather; larvae cause disease in lambs before egg production starts, so egg counts can be low. Haemonchus causes anaemia rather than diarrhoea.

Why do chronic Staphylococcus aureus intramammary infections have poor cure rates during lactation?
It is a virus-like organism without any cell wall, so no antibiotic class can act on it
It lives only on teat skin, so intramammary drugs never reach it inside the quarter
The organism forms micro-abscesses and survives inside cells, protected from antimicrobials
It is always resistant to every antimicrobial licensed for intramammary use in cattle
Answer and working
C. The organism forms micro-abscesses and survives inside cells, protected from antimicrobials
Staph. aureus forms fibrous-walled micro-abscesses and can survive within neutrophils and epithelial cells, limiting drug access. Mycoplasma, not Staph. aureus, lacks a cell wall.
6 · Lameness control · hard
A lameness intervention study compares herd prevalence before and after changing cubicle bedding. Why is regular mobility scoring of all cows better than counting treated cases?
Mobility scoring measures bedding comfort directly, which treatment records cannot record
Counting treated cases is illegal in most countries because of data protection law
Treatment records always overestimate true lameness prevalence, because every lame cow is recorded and treated twice
Treatment records depend on detection and treatment effort, so they shift with that effort even when true lameness does not
Answer and working
D. Treatment records depend on detection and treatment effort, so they shift with that effort even when true lameness does not
Treated-case counts reflect farmer detection and willingness to treat, which vary; whole-herd scoring measures prevalence directly and consistently.
