1 · Nozzles and droplet spectra · medium

A common practical rule for replacing a set of spray nozzles is when their measured flow exceeds that of new nozzles by about

  1. 1 per cent
  2. 50 per cent
  3. 10 per cent
  4. 100 per cent
Answer and working

C. 10 per cent

Worn orifices enlarge; once flow is roughly 10% above new the pattern is also distorted and overdosing is significant. 1% is within measurement error; waiting for 50% would badly overdose.

2 · Dusters · hard

A granule applicator is calibrated using dry sand instead of the actual granular product. The main problem is that

  1. sand is too heavy for the metering roller
  2. sand damages the delivery tubes
  3. output depends on particle size, density and flowability, so sand output does not predict product output
  4. granules are always metered by volume, so any free-flowing material of any density gives the same kg/ha at one setting
Answer and working

C. output depends on particle size, density and flowability, so sand output does not predict product output

Metering devices deliver a volume that depends on how the particles flow; mass per unit volume differs by material, so calibration must use the product itself. The idea that granules are always metered by volume, so any free-flowing material gives the same kg/ha, is the misconception the question targets.

3 · Weeders and inter-cultivation equipment · medium

The cono weeder used in rice has

  1. two conical rotors with serrated strips in tandem and a float
  2. a single rotating flat disc driven by a small petrol engine at high speed
  3. a spring-tine harrow with rubber fingers
  4. a heated plate to scorch weeds
Answer and working

A. two conical rotors with serrated strips in tandem and a float

The cono weeder has two cones set in tandem with opposite orientation, serrated strips that churn soil, and a float that stops it sinking in puddled soil. It is pushed and pulled between rows.

4 · Weeders and inter-cultivation equipment · hard

A weeder performance index combines field capacity, plant damage, weeding efficiency and power as

  1. field capacity × plant damage / (weeding efficiency × power)
  2. field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power
  3. weeding efficiency / (field capacity × power)
  4. power × plant damage / field capacity
Answer and working

B. field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power

The index rises with capacity, efficiency and the share of plants left undamaged, and falls with power input, so field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power is the correct form. The others reward damage or penalise capacity.

5 · Mowers: reciprocating and rotary; mechanics of cutting · medium

Registration of a reciprocating cutter bar is correct when

  1. the guard points lie in a straight line and the knife sections all touch the ledger plates
  2. at each stroke end the knife section centre lines coincide with the guard centre lines
  3. the knife clips just touch the sections
  4. the pitman is in line with the knife
Answer and working

B. at each stroke end the knife section centre lines coincide with the guard centre lines

That is the definition of registration. Straight guard points and parallel knife motion are alignment, a separate adjustment. Poor registration gives uneven cutting and uncut stems.

6 · Harvesting and threshing losses · medium

Machine loss (threshing, separating and cleaning) of a combine is obtained from field counts as

  1. total loss behind the machine minus header and pre-harvest losses
  2. header loss minus pre-harvest loss, measured in the standing crop ahead of the machine
  3. total loss plus header loss
  4. pre-harvest loss alone
Answer and working

A. total loss behind the machine minus header and pre-harvest losses

Grain found behind the machine includes what was already on the ground and what the header dropped; subtracting both leaves the loss from the threshing, separating and cleaning units.

7 · Threshers · medium

A multi-crop axial-flow thresher differs from a conventional throw-in thresher in that

  1. it has no threshing drum, as the crop is threshed by rubbing between two long rotating augers
  2. it cannot thresh wheat
  3. it works without a concave
  4. the crop moves helically along the drum axis, threshing and separating over a long path
Answer and working

D. the crop moves helically along the drum axis, threshing and separating over a long path

Axial movement gives longer residence and separation; different crops are handled by changing speed, concave and sieves.

8 · Root-crop diggers · medium

To reduce bruising on a potato digger elevator, the operator should

  1. run the elevator much faster than forward speed so it is almost empty and tubers do not pile up
  2. increase agitation to maximum
  3. keep the elevator loaded with soil as a cushion and match its speed to forward speed
  4. raise the drop height at the rear
Answer and working

C. keep the elevator loaded with soil as a cushion and match its speed to forward speed

A soil cushion protects tubers; a bare fast-running elevator and high drops cause bruising. Heavy agitation also damages tubers.

9 · Root-crop diggers · hard

Why is digging potatoes in wet, sticky clay particularly difficult for elevator diggers?

  1. Clay is too hard to penetrate
  2. Tubers float
  3. The haulm grows back
  4. Wet clay does not sieve through the elevator and clings to tubers
Answer and working

D. Wet clay does not sieve through the elevator and clings to tubers

Sticky soil forms a mass that will not fall through the rod gaps, so the elevator is overloaded and separation fails. Dry soil causes the opposite problem of clods.

10 · Cotton and sugarcane harvesting · medium

Compared with spindle pickers, stripper cotton harvesters

  1. deliver cleaner seed cotton
  2. are selective for open bolls only
  3. work best on tall, bushy plants with many green bolls still unopened
  4. harvest all bolls with more burs and trash, needing extra cleaning
Answer and working

D. harvest all bolls with more burs and trash, needing extra cleaning

Strippers take everything, so field cleaners or burr extractors and more gin cleaning are needed. They suit short, compact plants.
