Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Nozzles and droplet spectra · medium

For any real nozzle spray, the number median diameter (NMD) compared with the volume median diameter (VMD) is

  1. larger, because large droplets dominate the count
  2. smaller
  3. equal, for flat-fan nozzles
  4. larger only at high pressure
Answer and working

B. smaller

Small droplets dominate the count but carry little volume, while a few large droplets carry much of it, so NMD < VMD; VMD/NMD equals 1 only for a perfectly uniform spray.

2 · Sprayer calibration and application rate · hard

A sprayer with a flow-based rate controller increases its speed by 40% on a smooth part of the field. To keep L/ha constant with the same conventional nozzles, nozzle pressure must rise by a factor of about

  1. 1.4
  2. 1.2
  3. 2.8
  4. 2.0
Answer and working

D. 2.0

Flow must rise by 1.4 times; since Q ∝ √P, pressure must rise by 1.4² = 1.96, about double. That also makes the spray finer, which is why conventional nozzles have a limited speed range under rate control. 1.2 takes the square root of 1.4 instead of squaring it; 2.8 doubles 1.4.

3 · Weeders and inter-cultivation equipment · medium

Which weeding tool is designed to remove weeds within the crop row between plants?

  1. Finger weeder
  2. Duck-foot sweep between rows
  3. Ridger
  4. Rolling cultivator set to throw soil away from the row
Answer and working

A. Finger weeder

Finger weeders have rubber fingers, driven by ground wheels, that reach into the row and flick out small weeds while bending round stronger crop stems. Sweeps work between rows; ridgers heap soil.

4 · Weeders and inter-cultivation equipment · hard

A weeder performance index combines field capacity, plant damage, weeding efficiency and power as

  1. field capacity × plant damage / (weeding efficiency × power)
  2. field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power
  3. weeding efficiency / (field capacity × power)
  4. power × plant damage / field capacity
Answer and working

B. field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power

The index rises with capacity, efficiency and the share of plants left undamaged, and falls with power input, so field capacity × (100 − plant damage) × weeding efficiency / power is the correct form. The others reward damage or penalise capacity.

5 · Root-crop diggers · hard

Why is digging potatoes in wet, sticky clay particularly difficult for elevator diggers?

  1. Clay is too hard to penetrate
  2. Tubers float
  3. The haulm grows back
  4. Wet clay does not sieve through the elevator and clings to tubers
Answer and working

D. Wet clay does not sieve through the elevator and clings to tubers

Sticky soil forms a mass that will not fall through the rod gaps, so the elevator is overloaded and separation fails. Dry soil causes the opposite problem of clods.

6 · Straw and residue management machines · medium

The main environmental reason for developing in-situ rice straw management machines in north-west India was to

  1. reduce groundwater extraction
  2. increase straw export
  3. reduce air pollution from burning straw
  4. reduce fertiliser use
Answer and working

C. reduce air pollution from burning straw

Burning to clear fields for wheat causes severe seasonal air pollution; machines that manage straw without burning were developed and promoted for that reason.
