1 · The international food market · easy

Bennett's law describes which change in diets as incomes rise?

  1. A rising share of calories from starchy staples as households buy in bulk
  2. A falling share of income spent on food while the diet itself stays unchanged
  3. Staples' share of calories falls as meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables gain share
  4. A rising share of food bought in open-air markets rather than in supermarkets
Answer and working

C. Staples' share of calories falls as meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables gain share

Bennett's law is about diet composition: as income rises the share of calories from cheap starchy staples falls and consumption of animal products, fruit, vegetables and oils rises. The budget-share statement is Engel's law, a different law.

2 · The international food market · medium

A household spends 40 percent of its income on food. Its income rises by 10 percent and its income elasticity of demand for food is 0.5. Using the approximation that food spending rises by elasticity x income growth, what is the new food share?

  1. 42.00 percent
  2. 40.00 percent
  3. 44.00 percent
  4. 38.18 percent
Answer and working

D. 38.18 percent

Food spending rises by 0.5 x 10% = 5%, so new share = 0.4 x 1.05 / 1.10 = 38.18%. 42.00% forgets that income itself rose; 40% assumes the share cannot change; 44% treats food as having elasticity above one. The fall in share is Engel's law.

3 · Merchandise management · easy

In ABC analysis of a store's SKUs, the 'A' items are:

  1. the SKUs sold only in the first quarter of the financial year
  2. the many slow-selling SKUs that together account for little of sales
  3. the few SKUs giving most sales or margin
  4. the SKUs that must by law be displayed at eye level on shelves
Answer and working

C. the few SKUs giving most sales or margin

ABC analysis ranks SKUs by contribution; A items are few but important, C items are many but contribute little, often summarised as a Pareto (roughly 80/20) pattern, though the exact split varies.

4 · Merchandise management · medium

A product has a markup of 25 percent on retail price. What is its markup expressed on cost?

  1. 25.0 percent
  2. 75.0 percent
  3. 20.0 percent
  4. 33.3 percent
Answer and working

D. 33.3 percent

Markup on cost = markup on retail / (1 - markup on retail) = 0.25/0.75 = 33.3%. Check: cost 75, price 100, markup 25; 25/75 = 33.3%. 20% applies the conversion in the wrong direction; 75% is the cost as a share of price.

5 · Retail operations · easy

Which store layout, with long parallel aisles, is standard in supermarkets because it is efficient for planned shopping and replenishment?

  1. Boutique layout
  2. Grid layout
  3. Free-form layout
  4. Racetrack layout
Answer and working

B. Grid layout

The grid suits supermarkets. The racetrack or loop leads shoppers around a main path and is common in hypermarkets and department stores; free-form and boutique layouts suit browsing in speciality stores.

6 · Food retail in emerging and developed markets · easy

Which feature helps kirana stores in India survive competition from supermarkets?

  1. Proximity, home delivery and credit
  2. A government subsidy that pays each kirana store a fixed share of its sales
  3. Legal protection that prevents supermarkets from opening in any residential area
  4. Exclusive rights to sell packaged branded food, which supermarkets cannot stock
Answer and working

A. Proximity, home delivery and credit

Kirana strengths are service-based: nearness, long hours, delivery, small and loose quantities, credit and personal relationships. No general law gives them exclusive sales rights or a sales subsidy. Selling small loose quantities and giving credit to known customers are part of the same service advantage.

7 · Food retail in emerging and developed markets · medium

Under India's consolidated FDI policy, foreign investment in single-brand product retail trading is permitted:

  1. up to 26 percent only, and only in states that choose to allow it
  2. up to 51 percent only, with prior government approval needed in every single case
  3. up to 100 percent through the automatic route, subject to sourcing conditions
  4. not at all, because retail trading is fully closed to foreign investors
Answer and working

C. up to 100 percent through the automatic route, subject to sourcing conditions

Single-brand retail has been allowed up to 100% under the automatic route since 2018, with conditions including local sourcing norms for higher foreign shares. The 51%-with-approval rule applies to multi-brand retail. Check the current DPIIT policy before relying on any figure.
