1 · Reading comprehension · easy

In the SQ3R reading method, the three Rs stand for

  1. read, reflect, report
  2. read, recite, review
  3. review, repeat, recall
  4. read, record, revise
Answer and working

B. read, recite, review

Francis Robinson's SQ3R (1946) is survey, question, read, recite, review. The other sets use near-synonyms that are not part of the method.

2 · Business letters and e-mail · easy

In the full block letter format,

  1. every paragraph is indented and the date and signature block are aligned to the right-hand margin
  2. the date, complimentary close and signature begin at the centre while the paragraphs begin at the left
  3. every part of the letter, including the date and signature, begins at the left margin
  4. the inside address is placed at the foot of the letter beneath the signature and the enclosure notation
Answer and working

C. every part of the letter, including the date and signature, begins at the left margin

Full block aligns everything to the left margin and is the most common modern format. Starting the date and close at the centre describes modified block, and indented paragraphs with that layout describe semi-block. The inside address goes above the salutation in all of them.

3 · Business letters and e-mail · medium

Which statement on collection letters is consistent with standard business-writing guidance?

  1. They should use the same wording at every stage so that the debtor cannot claim the firm changed its position
  2. They should begin with a legal warning in the first letter so the debtor understands the seriousness straight away
  3. They should avoid mentioning the amount owed, because naming money in writing is considered impolite in business
  4. They move through stages from a friendly reminder to a firmer final demand while staying courteous throughout
Answer and working

D. They move through stages from a friendly reminder to a firmer final demand while staying courteous throughout

Collection series typically go reminder, inquiry, appeal, then warning or ultimatum, getting firmer while remaining courteous to preserve the customer. Opening with a legal threat damages goodwill early; repeating identical letters is ineffective; the amount and due date must always be stated.

4 · Social media, blogs and podcasts · easy

In the PESO model of communication planning, a favourable article about a dairy brand written independently by a journalist is

  1. owned media
  2. paid media
  3. shared media
  4. earned media
Answer and working

D. earned media

Earned media is coverage the firm does not pay for or control, won by being newsworthy. Paid media is advertising, owned media is the firm's own website, blog or newsletter, and shared media is social-platform content that audiences interact with and redistribute.

5 · Social media, blogs and podcasts · easy

A seed company's own blog of crop advisories, published on its website, is an example of

  1. paid media
  2. shared media
  3. earned media
  4. owned media
Answer and working

D. owned media

Content the firm publishes on channels it controls is owned media. Earned media is independent coverage; paid media is advertising; shared media is content on social platforms where audiences engage.

6 · Social media, blogs and podcasts · medium

In social media analytics, 'reach' differs from 'impressions' in that

  1. reach counts every view including repeats, while impressions count only the unique people who saw it
  2. reach counts only people who clicked a link, while impressions count likes, comments and shares
  3. reach is used only for paid advertisements, while impressions are used only for unpaid posts
  4. reach counts unique people who saw the content, while impressions count every view including repeats
Answer and working

D. reach counts unique people who saw the content, while impressions count every view including repeats

Reach is the number of unique accounts exposed; impressions are the total number of times the content was displayed, so impressions are at least as large as reach. The swapped definition reverses them, and neither metric is restricted to clicks or to paid versus unpaid posts.

7 · Presentations · easy

Monroe's motivated sequence has five steps. Which is the correct order?

  1. Need, attention, visualisation, satisfaction, action
  2. Attention, need, satisfaction, visualisation, action
  3. Attention, interest, desire, conviction, action
  4. Attention, need, visualisation, satisfaction, action
Answer and working

B. Attention, need, satisfaction, visualisation, action

Monroe's sequence is attention, need, satisfaction (the solution), visualisation (picturing the result) and action. Attention-interest-desire-conviction-action is an extended AIDA; the other two put the steps out of order.

8 · Meetings · medium

A cooperative society has 240 members, and its bye-laws set the quorum for a general meeting at one-fifth of members. What is the quorum?

  1. 60
  2. 12
  3. 120
  4. 48
Answer and working

D. 48

One-fifth of 240 = 240 / 5 = 48 members. 12 is one-twentieth; 120 is half; 60 is one-quarter. Actual quorum rules are set by each country's cooperative law and the society's bye-laws.

9 · Meetings · medium

Bruce Tuckman's stages of group development, in order, are

  1. forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning
  2. storming, forming, norming, performing, adjourning
  3. forming, storming, performing, norming, adjourning
  4. forming, norming, storming, performing, adjourning
Answer and working

A. forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning

Tuckman's sequence is forming, storming, norming, performing, with adjourning added later. The other orders swap stages; conflict (storming) normally comes before the group settles its norms.

10 · Meetings · medium

In the Thomas-Kilmann model, a manager who gives way to a supplier's demand on a minor issue to preserve a long-term relationship is using the mode that is

  1. competing: high assertiveness, low cooperativeness
  2. collaborating: high assertiveness, high cooperativeness
  3. avoiding: low assertiveness, low cooperativeness
  4. accommodating: low assertiveness, high cooperativeness
Answer and working

D. accommodating: low assertiveness, high cooperativeness

Accommodating yields to the other party's concerns (low assertive, high cooperative), useful when the issue matters more to them and the relationship matters to you. Competing pushes one's own concerns, avoiding sidesteps the issue, and collaborating seeks a solution that fully meets both sides.
