Which communication model is summarised by the chain 'who says what, in which channel, to whom, with what effect'?
D. Lasswell's model
Harold Lasswell (1948) framed communication as that chain of questions, which is why it is used to plan campaigns and media research. Berlo's SMCR names source, message, channel and receiver but not the 'effect' question, and Shannon and Weaver's engineering model is built around transmitter, signal and noise.
The concept of 'noise' as anything that distorts a signal between transmitter and receiver entered communication theory chiefly through
D. Shannon and Weaver's mathematical model of communication
Shannon and Weaver (1949) modelled telephone transmission: source, transmitter, channel, receiver, destination, with noise corrupting the signal. Berlo's SMCR is about the skills, attitudes, knowledge and culture of source and receiver; Lasswell and Rogers did not introduce noise as a model element.
Using Daft and Lengel's media richness theory, which channel is most suitable for telling a long-serving supervisor that her post is being abolished?
B. A face-to-face meeting
Media richness theory ranks face-to-face talk as the richest channel: it carries voice, expression and immediate feedback, which an emotional, non-routine message needs. Letters, e-mail and notices are lean channels suited to routine information; using them here would seem cold and leaves no room for questions.
A commonly cited reason why listeners' minds wander during a slow speech is that
B. people can think considerably faster than a speaker talks, leaving spare mental capacity that drifts to other thoughts
Listening texts point out that thought speed exceeds speaking speed, so listeners have spare capacity that tends to wander; active techniques like mentally summarising use that capacity. The reversed claim is wrong, the ear does not shut down after minutes, and listening can be trained.
A trainer tells managers that 'only 7 percent of communication is words; 93 percent is non-verbal'. What is the accurate correction?
A. Mehrabian's 7-38-55 figures came from studies of inconsistent messages concerning feelings and attitudes and do not apply to communication in general
Albert Mehrabian's experiments concerned single words spoken with conflicting tone and expression about liking; he has said the ratios apply only to such inconsistent messages about feelings. Reversing the split, or limiting it by channel, keeps the false generalisation, and the studies had nothing to do with letters.
A customer is kept waiting 40 minutes outside a manager's office for a scheduled appointment. In non-verbal communication, the message carried by the wait belongs to
B. chronemics
Chronemics is the communicative use of time, including punctuality and waiting, which can signal status or disrespect. Haptics is touch, kinesics is movement and proxemics is space.
In the SQ3R reading method, the three Rs stand for
B. read, recite, review
Francis Robinson's SQ3R (1946) is survey, question, read, recite, review. The other sets use near-synonyms that are not part of the method.
A researcher invents survey responses for villages that could not be visited and includes them in the analysis. This is
D. fabrication
Fabrication is making up data or results. Falsification is manipulating real data, equipment or methods so results are misrepresented; plagiarism is presenting others' work as one's own; self-plagiarism is reusing one's own published text without disclosure.
