What this subject covers

Trees on farms and in landscapes: definitions and history of agroforestry, classification of systems, diagnosis and design, and the major agroforestry systems of the world's agro-ecological zones. The Sustainability track has a single overview subject (agroforestry-trees-on-farms); this track treats agroforestry as a forester designs and manages it, in two subjects.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 5 and Unit 1 (National Agroforestry Policy 2014); ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (agroforestry); IFoS Forestry Paper I Section B; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 05 Agronomy Unit IX (agroforestry systems)

What ICAR AIEEA-PG asks from it

1 · Concept, definition and history of agroforestry · medium

Which is NOT one of the components of social forestry as defined in India?

  1. Clear-felling of reserved forest
  2. Farm forestry on private land
  3. Community woodlots on common land
  4. Extension forestry along roads and canals
Answer and working

A. Clear-felling of reserved forest

Social forestry includes farm, community, extension and recreational forestry.

2 · Classification: structural, functional, socio-economic, ecological · medium

In taungya, crops share the land with young trees only for the first few years. This temporal arrangement is:

  1. Coincident
  2. Interpolated
  3. Concomitant
  4. Overlapping
Answer and working

C. Concomitant

Concomitant: components together for part of the period.

3 · Homegardens, alley cropping, boundary planting, windbreaks and shelterbelts · medium

The most widely adopted form of agroforestry on Indian farms is:

  1. Boundary planting on bunds
  2. Alley cropping with Leucaena
  3. Forest farming of ginseng
  4. Riparian three-zone buffers
Answer and working

A. Boundary planting on bunds

It takes little cropland and marks ownership.

4 · Homegardens, alley cropping, boundary planting, windbreaks and shelterbelts · medium

For crop protection, windbreak porosity is often recommended at around:

  1. 0 to 5 percent
  2. 40 to 50 percent
  3. 80 to 90 percent
  4. 100 percent
Answer and working

B. 40 to 50 percent

Moderate porosity gives a long protected zone with little turbulence.

5 · Land capability classification and land use · easy

The USDA land capability classification has:

  1. Four classes, A to D
  2. Ten classes, 1 to 10
  3. Eight classes, I to VIII
