What this subject covers

Trees on farms and in landscapes: definitions and history of agroforestry, classification of systems, diagnosis and design, and the major agroforestry systems of the world's agro-ecological zones. The Sustainability track has a single overview subject (agroforestry-trees-on-farms); this track treats agroforestry as a forester designs and manages it, in two subjects.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 5 and Unit 1 (National Agroforestry Policy 2014); ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (agroforestry); IFoS Forestry Paper I Section B; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 05 Agronomy Unit IX (agroforestry systems)

What State Forest Service asks from it

State forest service (ACF and RFO) examinations

Social and farm forestry, common agroforestry species and systems of the state, windbreaks and shelterbelts, and the 2014 policy.

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Concept, definition and history of agroforestry · easy

The taungya system was formalised in the 1850s in Burma under:

  1. Albert Howard
  2. P. K. R. Nair
  3. Dietrich Brandis
  4. Gifford Pinchot
Answer and working

C. Dietrich Brandis

Brandis used taungya to establish teak plantations in Burma.

2 · Concept, definition and history of agroforestry · medium

The term 'social forestry' was popularised in India by the:

  1. Indian Forest Act, 1927
  2. National Commission on Agriculture, 1976
  3. National Forest Policy resolution of 1952
  4. Forest Conservation Act, 1980
Answer and working

B. National Commission on Agriculture, 1976

The NCA report of 1976 used social forestry for forestry serving rural communities.

3 · Agrisilviculture, silvopastoral and agrosilvopastoral systems · medium

A main management concern when introducing silvopasture on degraded land is:

  1. Removing all grass from the site
  2. Protecting young trees from browsing
  3. Planting trees at the highest density
  4. Preventing any manure deposition
Answer and working

B. Protecting young trees from browsing

Controlled grazing and stocking matched to forage protect trees.

4 · Homegardens, alley cropping, boundary planting, windbreaks and shelterbelts · hard

A farm boundary 400 m long is planted with one tree every 2 m. The number of trees is:

  1. 800
  2. 100
  3. 400
  4. 200
Answer and working

D. 200

400 / 2 = 200 trees (ignoring an extra tree at one end).

5 · Diagnosis and design methodology · medium

A key principle of D&D is that design should start from:

  1. A preferred tree species
  2. Farmers' goals and constraints
  3. The largest available subsidy
  4. The research station's results
Answer and working

B. Farmers' goals and constraints

D&D is problem-driven, not technology-driven.

6 · Land capability classification and land use · easy

The USDA land capability classification has:

  1. Four classes, A to D
  2. Ten classes, 1 to 10
  3. Eight classes, I to VIII
  4. Five classes, S1 to N
Answer and working

C. Eight classes, I to VIII

Classes I-VIII (Klingebiel and Montgomery, 1961).

7 · Land capability classification and land use · medium

Land that precludes commercial plant production and suits only recreation, wildlife or water supply is class:

  1. IV
  2. VI
  3. VIII
  4. II
Answer and working

C. VIII

Class VIII precludes commercial plant production.

8 · Land capability classification and land use · medium

Silvopasture and fodder banks are most appropriate on land capability classes:

  1. I to II
  2. III only
  3. V to VII
  4. VIII only
Answer and working

C. V to VII

Non-arable classes suited to grazing and woodland.

9 · National agroforestry policies · medium

The 2017 amendment of the Indian Forest Act removed from the definition of 'tree':

  1. Teak in reserved forests
  2. Bamboo grown outside forest areas
  3. All fruit trees growing on private farms
  4. Sandalwood on private land
Answer and working

B. Bamboo grown outside forest areas

Farm bamboo no longer needs felling or transit permits.

10 · National agroforestry policies · medium

Kenya's Farm Forestry Rules of 2009 aim for tree cover on agricultural land of at least:

  1. 1%
  2. 33%
  3. 66%
  4. 10%
Answer and working

D. 10%

The rules aim for at least 10 percent tree cover on farmland.
