What this subject covers

Trees on farms and in landscapes: definitions and history of agroforestry, classification of systems, diagnosis and design, and the major agroforestry systems of the world's agro-ecological zones. The Sustainability track has a single overview subject (agroforestry-trees-on-farms); this track treats agroforestry as a forester designs and manages it, in two subjects.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 5 and Unit 1 (National Agroforestry Policy 2014); ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (agroforestry); IFoS Forestry Paper I Section B; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 05 Agronomy Unit IX (agroforestry systems)

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Classification: structural, functional, socio-economic, ecological · medium

In taungya, crops share the land with young trees only for the first few years. This temporal arrangement is:

  1. Coincident
  2. Interpolated
  3. Concomitant
  4. Overlapping
Answer and working

C. Concomitant

Concomitant: components together for part of the period.

2 · Diagnosis and design methodology · medium

The main architect of the D&D methodology was:

  1. K. F. S. King
  2. Rachel Carson
  3. J. B. Raintree
  4. Dietrich Brandis
Answer and working

C. J. B. Raintree

Raintree's D&D User's Manual was published in 1987.

3 · Diagnosis and design methodology · medium

D&D is described as iterative because:

  1. It is carried out only once in each region
  2. Results feed back into renewed diagnosis
  3. Designs are never tested on farms
  4. Farmers are excluded from evaluation
Answer and working

B. Results feed back into renewed diagnosis

Monitoring of implementation returns to diagnosis and redesign.

4 · Multipurpose tree species and their characteristics · medium

An ideotype in agroforestry refers to:

  1. A disease of tree roots
  2. An ideal tree form
  3. A soil classification unit
  4. A type of nursery container
Answer and working

B. An ideal tree form

E.g. poplar with narrow crown, late flushing.

5 · Multipurpose tree species and their characteristics · medium

Which tree fixes nitrogen through Frankia rather than Rhizobium?

  1. Casuarina equisetifolia
  2. Leucaena leucocephala
  3. Albizia lebbeck
  4. Dalbergia sissoo
Answer and working

A. Casuarina equisetifolia

Casuarina and Alnus are actinorhizal.

6 · Multipurpose tree species and their characteristics · hard

For a poplar ideotype in winter-crop systems, a desirable trait is:

  1. Evergreen crown with heavy branches
  2. Very wide crown casting dense shade
  3. Late leaf flushing and early leaf fall
  4. Shallow roots spreading into crop rows
Answer and working

C. Late leaf flushing and early leaf fall

Reduces shade on rabi crops.

7 · Multipurpose tree species and their characteristics · hard

Which trait is generally NOT desirable in a multipurpose tree for agroforestry?

  1. Strong allelopathic effects on crops
  2. Tolerance of lopping and coppicing
  3. Nitrogen fixation by bacteria in root nodules
  4. Multiple useful products
Answer and working

A. Strong allelopathic effects on crops

Allelopathy harms associated crops.

8 · Temperate agroforestry: silvopasture, riparian buffers, forest farming · medium

Ginseng, goldenseal and shiitake grown under a forest canopy are examples of:

  1. Alley cropping
  2. Silvopasture
  3. Windbreaks
  4. Forest farming
Answer and working

D. Forest farming

Specialty crops in the understorey.

9 · Temperate agroforestry: silvopasture, riparian buffers, forest farming · medium

The USDA National Agroforestry Center is located in:

  1. Lincoln, Nebraska
  2. Nairobi, Kenya
  3. Dehradun, India
  4. Bonn, Germany
Answer and working

A. Lincoln, Nebraska

Established under the 1990 Farm Bill.

10 · National agroforestry policies · easy

India's National Agroforestry Policy was approved in:

  1. 2014
  2. 1988
  3. 2006
  4. 2019
Answer and working

A. 2014

February 2014; India was the first country with such a policy.
