What this subject covers

Forests as carbon sinks and sources: the science of climate change, forest carbon pools and their measurement, REDD+, carbon markets and adapting forests to a changing climate. General carbon accounting and offset markets are in the Sustainability track (carbon-accounting-ghg-inventories, carbon-markets-offsets); this subject covers the forest-specific measurement and project methods.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 12; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (global warming, role of forests in climate mitigation); IFoS Forestry Paper I Section B (environmental conservation); GATE EY Section 5 (global climate change)

1 · Impacts of climate change on forests, wildlife and water · medium

Which change in mountain hydrology is expected with warming?

  1. Earlier snowmelt and more precipitation as rain than snow
  2. Later snowmelt and a greater share of precipitation falling as snow
  3. No change in snowmelt timing
  4. Permanent end of all river flow
Answer and working

A. Earlier snowmelt and more precipitation as rain than snow

Warming shifts precipitation from snow to rain and advances melt, altering the timing of streamflow.

2 · Forest carbon pools: above-ground, below-ground, deadwood, litter, soil · easy

How many carbon pools in forest land are recognised by the IPCC guidelines?

  1. Three
  2. Two
  3. Seven
  4. Five
Answer and working

D. Five

Above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, dead wood, litter and soil organic matter.

3 · Forest carbon pools: above-ground, below-ground, deadwood, litter, soil · medium

Below-ground biomass is most often estimated from:

  1. Leaf area of the canopy measured from satellites
  2. Soil pH and texture
  3. Above-ground biomass using root-to-shoot ratios
  4. Stem bark thickness
Answer and working

C. Above-ground biomass using root-to-shoot ratios

Root excavation is costly, so ratios by ecological zone or local data are used.

4 · Measuring carbon: allometry, IPCC methods, tiers and default factors · easy

By the stock-difference method, a forest's biomass carbon rose from 150 to 180 t C/ha over 10 years. What is the annual removal in t CO2/ha?

  1. 3.0
  2. 30.0
  3. 110.0
  4. 11.0
Answer and working

D. 11.0

(180 − 150)/10 = 3 t C/ha/yr × 44/12 = 11.0 t CO2/ha/yr. 3.0 is in carbon; 110 is the total over 10 years.

5 · UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement and REDD+ · medium

India's updated NDC includes creating an additional carbon sink through forest and tree cover by 2030 of:

  1. 2.5 to 3 billion t CO2e
  2. 25 to 30 billion t CO2e
  3. 0.25 to 0.3 billion t CO2e
  4. 250 to 300 billion t CO2e
Answer and working

A. 2.5 to 3 billion t CO2e

The NDC target is an additional 2.5–3 billion tonnes CO2e.

6 · Climate adaptation in silviculture · easy

Assisted migration in forestry means:

  1. Moving species beyond their current range to projected suitable climates
  2. Moving forest staff to new posts
  3. Moving logs by river from upland forests to coastal sawmills
  4. Moving wildlife into zoos
Answer and working

A. Moving species beyond their current range to projected suitable climates

Assisted migration is debated because of ecological risks.

7 · Climate adaptation in silviculture · medium

Which practice reduces fire risk as a climate adaptation measure?

  1. Fuel management, including prescribed burning and fuel breaks
  2. Leaving all slash in continuous piles
  3. Planting dense resinous monocultures right next to villages
  4. Stopping all fire monitoring
Answer and working

A. Fuel management, including prescribed burning and fuel breaks

Reducing fuel loads and continuity lowers fire intensity and spread.

8 · Disaster management: floods, droughts, landslides, cyclones · easy

India's National Disaster Management Authority was established under the Disaster Management Act of:

  1. 1927
  2. 1972
  3. 2005
  4. 2016
Answer and working

C. 2005

The NDMA is chaired by the Prime Minister.

9 · Disaster management: floods, droughts, landslides, cyclones · medium

A major human cause of landslides in mountain forests is:

  1. Planting grass on stable slopes beside villages
  2. Poorly designed road construction on steep slopes
  3. Fencing forests against grazing
  4. Monitoring rainfall
Answer and working

B. Poorly designed road construction on steep slopes

Road cuts and fills destabilise slopes and concentrate drainage.
