1 · Avian physiology · easy

Fertilisation of the ovum in the hen takes place in the:

  1. Magnum
  2. Isthmus
  3. Infundibulum
  4. Vagina
Answer and working

C. Infundibulum

The ovum is fertilised in the infundibulum within the short time (about a quarter of an hour) before albumen is added. Once the magnum lays down albumen, sperm cannot reach the germinal disc. Sperm are stored near the vagina but fertilisation does not occur there.

2 · Avian physiology · medium

In which part of the oviduct does the forming egg spend about 20 hours?

  1. Magnum (albumen-secreting region)
  2. Shell gland (uterus)
  3. Isthmus
  4. Infundibulum
Answer and working

B. Shell gland (uterus)

The shell gland holds the egg for about 20 hours, adding water and salts to the albumen and then the calcium carbonate shell, pigment and cuticle. The magnum takes about 3 hours and the isthmus a little over an hour.

3 · Avian physiology · easy

In the domestic hen, the functional reproductive organs are:

  1. The left ovary and left oviduct
  2. The right ovary and right oviduct
  3. Both ovaries and both oviducts equally
  4. The left ovary and the right oviduct
Answer and working

A. The left ovary and left oviduct

Only the left ovary and oviduct develop in the hen; the right regress during embryonic life. This is why a hen has a single oviduct opening into the cloaca.

4 · Avian physiology · hard

Where does the hen store sperm that fertilise eggs for days or weeks after a single mating?

  1. The magnum's tubular glands
  2. The infundibulum's mucosal folds only
  3. Sperm-host glands at the utero-vaginal junction
  4. The shell gland lumen
Answer and working

C. Sperm-host glands at the utero-vaginal junction

Sperm are held mainly in sperm-host (storage) tubules at the utero-vaginal junction and released gradually to the infundibulum, where fertilisation occurs. Smaller secondary storage in the infundibulum exists, but the main site is the utero-vaginal junction.

5 · Broiler management · easy

20,000 broiler chicks were placed and 900 died or were culled before sale. What is the liveability?

  1. 4.5%
  2. 95.5%
  3. 4.7%
  4. 104.7%
Answer and working

B. 95.5%

Liveability = (placed − dead) ÷ placed × 100 = 19,100 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 95.5%. 4.5% is the mortality; dividing by survivors gives 4.7%; inverting (placed ÷ survivors) gives 104.7%.

6 · Broiler management · medium

A broiler breeder pullet flock has a mean body weight of 1500 g. Flock uniformity is usually defined as the percentage of birds whose weight lies between:

  1. 1,425 and 1,575 g
  2. 1,200 and 1,800 g
  3. 1,490 and 1,510 g
  4. 1,350 and 1,650 g
Answer and working

D. 1,350 and 1,650 g

Uniformity is the percentage of birds within ±10% of the mean: 1500 × 0.9 = 1350 g and 1500 × 1.1 = 1650 g. Many guides aim for 80% or more. ±10 g confuses percent with grams; 1,425–1,575 g is only ±5% and 1,200–1,800 g is ±20%.

7 · Incubation · easy

The incubation period of the Muscovy duck egg is about:

  1. 21 days
  2. 28 days
  3. 17 days
  4. 35 days
Answer and working

D. 35 days

Muscovy (Cairina moschata) eggs take about 35 days, clearly longer than common duck eggs (about 28 days). 17–18 days is the Japanese quail.

8 · Hatchery operations · easy

A fumigation protocol uses formalin and potassium permanganate in the usual ratio of 2 mL formalin to 1 g permanganate. If 60 g of permanganate is used, how much formalin is needed?

  1. 30 mL
  2. 60 mL
  3. 120 mL
  4. 180 mL
Answer and working

C. 120 mL

Formalin = 60 g × 2 mL/g = 120 mL. Halving (30 mL) reverses the ratio; 180 mL multiplies by the whole ratio (2 + 1) instead of the formalin part. Always add formalin to permanganate in a deep container and leave the room at once; formaldehyde is irritant and carcinogenic and restricted in some countries.

9 · Incubation · hard

During the last days of incubation the chick pips into the air cell and begins breathing air. This event is called:

  1. External pipping
  2. Transfer
  3. Internal pipping
  4. Draw-down
Answer and working

C. Internal pipping

Internal pipping is when the beak breaks through the inner membrane into the air cell and lung respiration begins. External pipping follows, when the shell itself is broken. Transfer is moving eggs from setter to hatcher; draw-down describes the air cell shape near hatch.

10 · Biosecurity · easy

The period for which a cleaned and disinfected poultry house is left empty before restocking is called:

  1. Withdrawal period
  2. Quarantine
  3. Incubation period
  4. Downtime
Answer and working

D. Downtime

Downtime is the empty period between flocks after cleaning and disinfection. A withdrawal period applies to medicines before slaughter or egg sale; quarantine isolates new or sick animals.
