1 · Septicaemia and toxaemia · easy

The classic serum IgG concentration below which a dairy calf sampled at 24–48 hours of age is considered to have failure of transfer of passive immunity is:

  1. 400 mg/dL
  2. 25 g/L
  3. 1 g/L
  4. 10 g/L
Answer and working

D. 10 g/L

Serum IgG < 10 g/L is the classic FTPI cut-off in calves. 400 mg/dL (4 g/L) is the foal threshold; 25 g/L is a target for 'excellent' transfer, not the failure cut-off.

2 · Abomasal displacement · medium

The IV fluid best suited to a cow with abomasal volvulus and hypochloraemic, hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis is:

  1. Lactated Ringer's with extra bicarbonate
  2. 0.9% sodium chloride with added potassium chloride
  3. 5% dextrose alone
  4. Isotonic sodium bicarbonate
Answer and working

B. 0.9% sodium chloride with added potassium chloride

Chloride-rich saline corrects hypochloraemia and allows the kidney to excrete bicarbonate; potassium replaces losses. Bicarbonate would worsen alkalosis.

3 · Colic · easy

The most common site of large-colon impaction in horses is the:

  1. Rectum
  2. Duodenum
  3. Caecal apex
  4. Pelvic flexure
Answer and working

D. Pelvic flexure

The large colon narrows abruptly at the pelvic flexure, where impactions most often form.

4 · Pulmonary diseases · medium

An adult stabled horse fed dusty hay has chronic cough, expiratory effort and a heave line; BAL shows marked neutrophilia. The mainstay of management is:

  1. Long-term antibiotics to clear the underlying bacterial bronchopneumonia
  2. Surgery on the larynx
  3. Anthelmintic treatment (for lungworm)
  4. Reducing dust and mould exposure (turnout, soaked hay, low-dust bedding)
Answer and working

D. Reducing dust and mould exposure (turnout, soaked hay, low-dust bedding)

Severe equine asthma is driven by inhaled organic dust; environmental control is essential, with corticosteroids and bronchodilators as adjuncts.

5 · Diseases of the urinary system · easy

In a castrated male goat with obstructive urolithiasis, the calculus most commonly lodges at the:

  1. Bladder neck only
  2. Renal pelvis of one kidney
  3. Urethral process
  4. Sigmoid flexure only
Answer and working

C. Urethral process

In small ruminants the urethral process (vermiform appendage) is the commonest site; the sigmoid flexure is typical in cattle.

6 · Diseases of the urinary system · medium

Enzootic haematuria in cattle is associated with long-term ingestion of:

  1. Bracken fern
  2. Lantana camara
  3. Oak acorns
  4. St John's wort
Answer and working

A. Bracken fern

Bracken carcinogens cause bladder tumours with intermittent haematuria; oak causes AKI; Lantana and St John's wort cause photosensitisation.

7 · Diseases of the nervous system · easy

Dorsomedial strabismus, star-gazing, head pressing and blindness with normal pupillary reflexes in a young feedlot steer suggest:

  1. Hypomagnesaemic tetany
  2. Polioencephalomalacia
  3. Botulism
  4. Listeriosis
Answer and working

B. Polioencephalomalacia

PEM causes cortical signs with intact PLR; listeriosis causes asymmetric brainstem signs.

8 · Diseases of the musculoskeletal system · medium

A dairy cow is suddenly lame with symmetrical swelling of the interdigital space that separates the claws, and a foul-smelling interdigital fissure. The main agent is:

  1. Treponema spp.
  2. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
  3. Dichelobacter nodosus alone
  4. Fusobacterium necrophorum
Answer and working

D. Fusobacterium necrophorum

Bovine foot rot is interdigital necrobacillosis. Treponemes cause digital dermatitis; D. nodosus causes ovine foot rot.

Approximately how many grams of sodium bicarbonate (molar mass 84 g/mol) provide 360 mmol of bicarbonate?

  1. 3 g
  2. 300 g
  3. 30 g
  4. 4.3 g
Answer and working

C. 30 g

360 mmol × 84 mg/mmol = 30,240 mg ≈ 30 g. Dividing instead of multiplying (360/84 ≈ 4.3) is a common error, and misplacing the mg-to-g conversion (÷ 10,000 or ÷ 100 instead of ÷ 1000) gives 3 g or 300 g.

10 · Fluid therapy and blood transfusion · easy

In a major cross-match, which components are mixed?

  1. Recipient plasma with recipient red cells
  2. Donor plasma with donor red cells
  3. Donor plasma with recipient red cells
  4. Donor red cells with recipient plasma
Answer and working

D. Donor red cells with recipient plasma

The major cross-match detects recipient antibodies against donor cells; the minor tests donor plasma against recipient cells.
