What this subject covers

Flies, mosquitoes, midges, lice, fleas, ticks and mites: the damage they do themselves and the diseases they carry, and the ectoparasiticides used against them.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF core group 06; ICAR AIEEA-PG 13 (Parasitology)

What ICAR AIEEA asks from it

ICAR AIEEA (PG) — Code 13 Veterinary Science (Parasitology)

Identification features (Anopheles vs Culex vs Aedes, sucking vs chewing lice, flea combs, tick genera, Sarcoptes vs Psoroptes vs Chorioptes), one-, two- and three-host ticks with examples, which vector carries which pathogen, types of myiasis and ectoparasiticide classes with mode of action.

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Culicoides midges · easy

Culicoides biting midges belong to the family:

  1. Psychodidae
  2. Culicidae
  3. Ceratopogonidae
  4. Simuliidae
Answer and working

C. Ceratopogonidae

Culicoides are ceratopogonids. Culicidae are mosquitoes, Simuliidae blackflies and Psychodidae include the phlebotomine sandflies, all Nematocera but different families.

2 · Lice · easy

Under a hand lens, a louse with a head narrower than its thorax and piercing mouthparts is a:

  1. Chewing louse (Amblycera)
  2. Flea larva
  3. Sucking louse (Anoplura)
  4. Chewing louse (Ischnocera)
Answer and working

C. Sucking louse (Anoplura)

Sucking lice have a narrow head, narrower than the thorax; chewing lice have a broad head wider than the thorax. Both Ischnocera and Amblycera are chewing lice.

3 · Hard ticks · easy

In which hard tick genus does the anal groove curve in front of the anus?

  1. Ixodes
  2. Hyalomma
  3. Rhipicephalus
  4. Amblyomma
Answer and working

A. Ixodes

Ixodes is the only genus of the Prostriata, with the anal groove anterior to the anus. All other genera (Metastriata) have it posterior or absent.

4 · Hard ticks · medium

A hard tick has short palps, a hexagonal basis capituli, no festoons and is inornate. It belongs to:

  1. Dermacentor
  2. Rhipicephalus (Boophilus)
  3. Amblyomma
  4. Haemaphysalis (festooned, inornate)
Answer and working

B. Rhipicephalus (Boophilus)

Boophilus ticks have very short palps, a hexagonal basis capituli and no festoons. Rhipicephalus sensu stricto also has a hexagonal basis but has festoons; Dermacentor has a rectangular basis and is ornate; Amblyomma has long palps.

5 · Mange mites · easy

A mite with an oval body, long legs and long jointed pedicels ending in trumpet-shaped suckers is:

  1. Sarcoptes
  2. Demodex
  3. Chorioptes
  4. Psoroptes
Answer and working

D. Psoroptes

Long, jointed (three-segmented) pedicels with trumpet suckers identify Psoroptes. Sarcoptes has long unjointed pedicels, Chorioptes short unjointed pedicels with cup suckers, and Demodex is cigar-shaped with stubby legs.

6 · Myiasis · medium

New World screwworm was eradicated from North and Central America principally by:

  1. Releasing radiation-sterilised males in huge numbers (sterile insect technique)
  2. Vaccination of livestock (with larval antigens)
  3. Introduction of a parasitic wasp
  4. Mass treatment of all cattle with organochlorine dips every two weeks for a decade
Answer and working

A. Releasing radiation-sterilised males in huge numbers (sterile insect technique)

SIT works because females mate once; mating a sterile male yields infertile eggs. Insecticides were adjuncts, but eradication came from sustained sterile male releases.

7 · Vectors of babesiosis and theileriosis · medium

Babesia in one-host Boophilus ticks must pass to the next tick generation by:

  1. Transovarial transmission
  2. Sexual transmission between male ticks
  3. Transstadial transmission only
  4. Mechanical transmission on the mouthparts
Answer and working

A. Transovarial transmission

Because a one-host tick never changes host, a Babesia acquired by the engorging female can reach a new host only through her eggs. Transstadial passage alone would leave the parasite on the same animal.

8 · Vectors of babesiosis and theileriosis · medium

Tropical theileriosis (Theileria annulata) of crossbred cattle in India is transmitted mainly by:

  1. Haemaphysalis longicornis
  2. Hyalomma anatolicum
  3. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus
  4. Ixodes ricinus
Answer and working

B. Hyalomma anatolicum

H. anatolicum is the main vector of T. annulata. R. appendiculatus transmits T. parva in Africa, and H. longicornis transmits T. orientalis.

9 · Ectoparasiticides and resistance · medium

Which mechanism of acaricide resistance is metabolic rather than target-site?

  1. Altered acetylcholinesterase
  2. GABA receptor mutation (rdl)
  3. Increased activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases
  4. Sodium channel mutation (kdr)
Answer and working

C. Increased activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases

Metabolic resistance increases detoxifying enzymes such as P450s, esterases and glutathione S-transferases. The other three are target-site mutations.

10 · Myiasis · medium

The larvae of Hypoderma lineatum spend the winter resting stage in the:

  1. Frontal sinuses
  2. Stomach wall
  3. Epidural fat of the spinal canal
  4. Submucosa of the oesophagus
Answer and working

D. Submucosa of the oesophagus

H. lineatum rests in the oesophageal submucosa, H. bovis in the spinal canal. Frontal sinuses are the site of Oestrus ovis and the stomach of Gasterophilus.
