1 · Yak management · medium

Which statement on yak climatic tolerance is correct?

  1. Yak tolerate heat as well as zebu cattle and can be farmed in humid plains
  2. Yak tolerate cold and hypoxia but suffer heat stress and do poorly at low altitude
  3. Yak need warm housing in winter because their coat lacks an undercoat
  4. Yak adapt equally well at all altitudes once given time to acclimatise
Answer and working

B. Yak tolerate cold and hypoxia but suffer heat stress and do poorly at low altitude

Yak have a thick skirt of guard hair, a down undercoat and few functional sweat glands; they handle cold and hypoxia but suffer heat stress and fare badly below about 2,500 to 3,000 m.

2 · Mithun management · medium

Four strains of mithun are described in India. They are:

  1. Arunachali, Bhutani, Tripuri and Sikkimi
  2. Nagami, Assamese, Garo and Khasi
  3. Arunachali, Nagami, Manipuri and Mizo
  4. Manipuri, Chin, Kachin and Shan
Answer and working

C. Arunachali, Nagami, Manipuri and Mizo

The four strains are named after the states that hold them: Arunachali, Nagami, Manipuri and Mizo. Chin, Kachin and Shan are regions of Myanmar.

3 · Donkey and mule management · easy

Gestation length in the donkey is closest to:

  1. 9 months
  2. 12 months
  3. 6 months
  4. 15 months
Answer and working

B. 12 months

Donkey gestation is about 12 months, often a little over a year. Nine months is near cattle.

4 · Duck production · medium

A practical way to tell drakes from ducks in adult mallard-derived breeds is that the drake:

  1. Has curled tail feathers and a quieter, hoarse voice
  2. Lays smaller eggs and has a louder quack
  3. Has a red caruncle on the face and hisses
  4. Is always smaller and lighter than the duck
Answer and working

A. Has curled tail feathers and a quieter, hoarse voice

Mallard-derived drakes have curled 'sex feathers' on the tail and a hoarse voice, while females quack loudly. Facial caruncles and hissing belong to the Muscovy, and in most breeds drakes are larger.

5 · Quail production · medium

A white, foamy secretion at the vent of an adult male Japanese quail comes from the:

  1. Cloacal gland, and it shows sexual activity
  2. Uropygial gland, and it indicates moulting
  3. Bursa of Fabricius, and it signals infection
  4. Kidney, and it indicates urate overload
Answer and working

A. Cloacal gland, and it shows sexual activity

Mature males have a large cloacal gland whose foam is a sign of sexual maturity and activity. The uropygial (preen) gland is on the rump; the bursa regresses with age.

6 · Quail production · medium

1000 quail eggs are set. Fertility is 85% and hatchability of fertile eggs is 80%. Hatchability on total eggs set is:

  1. 80%
  2. 68%
  3. 85%
  4. 82.5%
Answer and working

B. 68%

Chicks = 1000 x 0.85 x 0.8 = 680; on total set = 680/1000 = 68%. 80% is hatch of fertile eggs (HOF), a different index; 82.5% averages fertility and hatchability instead of multiplying them.

7 · Pastoral production systems · easy

A 250 kg TLU eating 2.5% of its body weight as dry matter needs per day:

  1. 62.50 kg DM
  2. 0.62 kg DM
  3. 100.00 kg DM
  4. 6.25 kg DM
Answer and working

D. 6.25 kg DM

250 x 0.025 = 6.25 kg DM. Slipping the decimal gives 62.50 or 0.625 (shown as 0.62) kg; dividing by 2.5 instead of taking 2.5% gives 100.00 kg.

8 · Transhumant production systems · medium

Gujjar buffalo herders, including the Van Gujjar of Uttarakhand, spend summer in high meadows called:

  1. Dhars
  2. Bannis
  3. Bugyals
  4. Rohis
Answer and working

C. Bugyals

Bugyals are alpine meadows of Uttarakhand, used by Van Gujjars in summer. Dhar is used in Himachal for ridge pastures, and Banni is a grassland in Kutch.

9 · Wildlife management · easy

In a capture-mark-recapture study, 40 deer are marked and released. Later 50 deer are caught, of which 10 are marked. The Lincoln-Petersen estimate of population size is:

  1. 80
  2. 200
  3. 8
  4. 12.5
Answer and working

B. 200

N = M x C / R = 40 x 50 / 10 = 200. 80 simply counts distinct animals handled; inverting the ratio gives 8; putting R on top (50 x 10 / 40) gives 12.5.

10 · Wildlife management · easy

In a biosphere reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme, the three zones from inside outward are:

  1. Buffer, core and transition
  2. Transition, core and buffer
  3. Core, transition and buffer
  4. Core, buffer and transition
Answer and working

D. Core, buffer and transition

The strictly protected core is surrounded by a buffer zone with compatible uses, and an outer transition zone where settlements and sustainable development occur.
