How does a multirotor drone with fixed-pitch propellers turn about its vertical axis (yaw)?

  1. It speeds up the two front motors and slows the two rear motors by equal amounts, keeping total thrust constant
  2. It speeds up the propellers spinning one way and slows those spinning the other, so reaction torques no longer cancel
  3. It changes the blade pitch of all propellers together through a swashplate, as a single-rotor helicopter does
  4. It tilts the outer motors on small servo mounts so that part of each rotor's thrust points sideways around the frame, as a tilt-rotor does in hover
Answer and working

B. It speeds up the propellers spinning one way and slows those spinning the other, so reaction torques no longer cancel

Half the propellers turn clockwise and half anticlockwise. Changing the speed of one set relative to the other leaves a net reaction torque that yaws the frame. Front-versus-rear speed changes pitch the aircraft rather than yaw it, and fixed-pitch multirotors have no swashplate.

A fixed-wing mapping drone weighs 40 N, has a lift-to-drag ratio of 8 and cruises at 16 m/s. What aerodynamic power does level flight require?

  1. 640 W
  2. 5,120 W
  3. 80 W
  4. 0.31 W
Answer and working

C. 80 W

Drag = W/(L/D) = 40/8 = 5 N; power = D × V = 5 × 16 = 80 W. 640 W multiplies weight by speed as if the aircraft were climbing vertically; 5,120 W multiplies by L/D instead of dividing. 0.31 W divides the drag by the speed (5/16) instead of multiplying.

3 · Droplet drift from drones · medium

In the Stokes regime, how does the settling velocity of a 120 µm droplet compare with that of a 40 µm droplet of the same liquid?

  1. 3 times faster
  2. 9 times faster
  3. the same speed
  4. 27 times faster
Answer and working

B. 9 times faster

Stokes velocity ∝ d². (120/40)² = 9. 3 times assumes proportional to d; 27 times uses d³. Stokes' law slightly overestimates the speed of the larger droplet, but the scaling is the point.

A stereo system measures depth with an error of 1 cm at 2 m. With the same cameras and disparity resolution, roughly what error should be expected at 4 m?

  1. 1 cm
  2. 8 cm
  3. 4 cm
  4. 2 cm
Answer and working

C. 4 cm

Depth error ΔZ ≈ Z²Δd/(fB) grows with the square of distance: doubling Z gives four times the error. 2 cm assumes a linear growth. 1 cm assumes the error does not change; 8 cm cubes the distance ratio.

5 · Machine vision · easy

With the same camera sensor, what happens to the field of view when a lens of shorter focal length is fitted?

  1. The field of view becomes wider
  2. The field of view does not change
  3. The field of view becomes narrower
  4. Only the image brightness changes
Answer and working

A. The field of view becomes wider

Field of view depends on sensor size and focal length; a shorter focal length gives a wider angle (and a coarser GSD at the same height).

6 · Robot end-effectors · easy

What is the main advantage of soft, air-driven grippers for picking fruit such as tomatoes or strawberries?

  1. They conform to irregular shapes and spread contact pressure, reducing bruising
  2. They grip with very high force, so fruit cannot slip however fast the arm moves
  3. They cut the stem as they close, so no separate detachment tool is ever required
  4. They need no air or power supply, because the material moves by itself on contact
Answer and working

A. They conform to irregular shapes and spread contact pressure, reducing bruising

Compliant fingers wrap around the fruit and limit peak pressure. They still need an actuator (often air), and most designs use a separate detachment method.

7 · Autonomous tractors · medium

What does ISO 25119 deal with?

  1. Test procedures for measuring tractor drawbar power and fuel use in an official national or OECD-style tractor test
  2. The data messages exchanged between a tractor and implement over a common bus
  3. Noise levels at the operator's ear on tractors with and without a closed cab
  4. Safety-related parts of control systems on tractors and agricultural and forestry machinery
Answer and working

D. Safety-related parts of control systems on tractors and agricultural and forestry machinery

ISO 25119 is the functional-safety standard for agricultural machinery control systems. ISOBUS is ISO 11783; power and noise tests are covered by OECD tractor codes and other standards.

A differential-drive weeding robot has a track width of 0.6 m. Its right wheels run at 1.2 m/s and its left wheels at 0.8 m/s. What is the radius of the path followed by its centre?

  1. 0.67 m
  2. 3.0 m
  3. 1.5 m
  4. 0.6 m
Answer and working

C. 1.5 m

Forward speed v = (1.2 + 0.8)/2 = 1.0 m/s; yaw rate ω = (1.2 − 0.8)/0.6 = 0.667 rad/s; R = v/ω = 1.5 m. 3.0 m doubles the correct radius (using half the track width would instead give 0.75 m); 0.67 is the yaw rate in rad/s, not a radius.

A 24 V supply is switched by pulse-width modulation at 35% duty cycle. What is the average voltage applied to the motor?

  1. 6.9 V
  2. 15.6 V
  3. 24 V
  4. 8.4 V
Answer and working

D. 8.4 V

Average voltage = duty cycle × supply = 0.35 × 24 = 8.4 V. 15.6 V is the off-time share; 24 V is the peak. 6.9 V divides 24 by 3.5 instead of multiplying by 0.35.

What is transfer learning in agricultural image analysis?

  1. Training a model on one crop and using it unchanged on a different crop in another country
  2. Starting from a network pre-trained on a large general image set and fine-tuning it on crop images
  3. Transferring a trained model from a laptop to a tractor computer without any further changes to its code
  4. Copying labels from one image to the next frame of a video so less labelling is needed
Answer and working

B. Starting from a network pre-trained on a large general image set and fine-tuning it on crop images

Pre-trained features (edges, textures, shapes) transfer well, so fine-tuning needs far fewer labelled crop images. Deploying unchanged models elsewhere is not transfer learning and often fails.
