What this subject covers

Refrigeration systems, ice-bank and chilled-water plants, cold stores and the cold chain from farm to retail. The agricultural engineering track (refrigeration-cold-chain) gives the general theory.

In the exams: ICAR AICE subject 38 Unit 6; ICAR AIEEA-PG group 17 Unit III (refrigeration, compression systems, sizing a refrigeration machine)

What ICAR AIEEA-PG asks from it

ICAR AIEEA-PG — Dairy Technology (group 17)

Unit III: refrigeration and air conditioning, artificial refrigeration, compression systems, refrigeration accessories, and calculation of the size of a refrigeration machine.

1 · Vapour compression cycle and coefficient of performance · medium

What is the Carnot COP for refrigeration with evaporation at −10 °C and condensation at 35 °C?

  1. 5.85
  2. 6.85
  3. 3.50
  4. 0.22
Answer and working

A. 5.85

COP = 263.15 ÷ (308.15 − 263.15) = 5.85. 0.22 uses Celsius; 6.85 is the heat-pump Carnot COP; 3.50 is a meaningless ratio of Celsius values.

2 · Vapour compression cycle and coefficient of performance · easy

How many tons of refrigeration is 100 kW (1 TR = 3.517 kW)?

  1. 100.0 TR
  2. 12.0 TR
  3. 28.4 TR
  4. 351.7 TR
Answer and working

C. 28.4 TR

100 ÷ 3.517 = 28.4 TR. 351.7 multiplies; 100 ignores the conversion; 12 confuses with 12,000 Btu/h.

3 · Bulk milk coolers · medium

A bulk milk cooler must cool 2,060 kg of milk from 35 to 4 °C in 3 hours (cp 3.9 kJ/kg K). What average refrigeration capacity is needed, ignoring losses?

  1. 23.1 kW
  2. 69.2 kW
  3. 3.0 kW
  4. 26.0 kW
Answer and working

A. 23.1 kW

Q = 2,060 × 3.9 × 31 = 249,054 kJ over 10,800 s = 23.1 kW. The others multiply by 3, use 35 K instead of the 31 K drop, or use 4 K.

4 · Cooling load calculation for cold stores · easy

A cold store's calculated load is 50 kW. With a 10% safety factor, what capacity is specified?

  1. 45 kW
  2. 60 kW
  3. 50 kW
  4. 55 kW
Answer and working

D. 55 kW

50 × 1.1 = 55 kW; 50 kW has no margin and 60 kW uses 20%.

5 · Compressors, condensers, evaporators and expansion devices · easy

Which compressor type dominates large dairy ammonia plants?

  1. Diaphragm
  2. Scroll
  3. Capillary
  4. Screw
Answer and working

D. Screw

Screw compressors handle large volumes efficiently.

6 · Bulk milk coolers · easy

The main purpose of a bulk milk cooler is to:

  1. Separate cream
  2. Ferment milk
  3. Pasteurise milk on the farm before sale
  4. Cool milk quickly after milking
Answer and working

D. Cool milk quickly after milking

Prompt cooling preserves raw milk quality.

7 · Hardening rooms and frozen storage · easy

Hardening tunnels for ice cream typically use air at about:

  1. 0 °C
  2. +4 °C
  3. −5 °C
  4. −30 to −40 °C
Answer and working

D. −30 to −40 °C

Fast hardening keeps ice crystals small.

8 · Refrigerated transport and cold-chain monitoring · easy

Raw milk tankers are usually:

  1. Refrigerated to −18 °C
  2. Open-topped
  3. Insulated but not refrigerated
  4. Heated to keep milk warm in transit
Answer and working

C. Insulated but not refrigerated

Pre-cooled milk and short journeys limit warming.

9 · Psychrometry and air conditioning · easy

Relative humidity compares:

  1. Actual and saturation vapour pressure
  2. Dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature
  3. Day and night temperature
  4. Air and water density
Answer and working

A. Actual and saturation vapour pressure

RH = partial pressure ÷ saturation pressure × 100.

10 · Bulk milk coolers · easy

Direct-expansion bulk milk coolers evaporate refrigerant in:

  1. The milk itself
  2. A separate ice tank
  3. Plates on the tank base and walls
  4. The farm well
Answer and working

C. Plates on the tank base and walls

Ice-bank coolers use a separate ice store.
