1 · Concepts of quality and quality systems · easy

Which definition of quality is associated with Joseph Juran?

  1. Conformance to requirements as written
  2. Zero defects in every batch produced
  3. Fitness for use
  4. The lowest price for a given specification
Answer and working

C. Fitness for use

Juran defined quality as fitness for use. Conformance to requirements and zero defects are Crosby's ideas; price is not a definition of quality.

2 · Concepts of quality and quality systems · easy

Who introduced control charts and the distinction between common-cause and special-cause variation?

  1. Walter Shewhart
  2. Joseph Juran
  3. Genichi Taguchi
  4. Philip Crosby
Answer and working

A. Walter Shewhart

Shewhart developed control charts at Bell Laboratories in the 1920s. Juran described the quality trilogy, Taguchi robust design and the loss function, and Crosby zero defects.

3 · Concepts of quality and quality systems · medium

What does Juran's quality trilogy consist of?

  1. Inspection, testing and audit
  2. Plan, do and check
  3. Prevention, appraisal and failure
  4. Quality planning, quality control and quality improvement
Answer and working

D. Quality planning, quality control and quality improvement

Juran's trilogy is planning, control and improvement. Prevention-appraisal-failure is the cost model; plan-do-check(-act) is the PDCA cycle; inspection, testing and audit are activities, not the trilogy.

4 · Total quality management tools · easy

Which quality tool ranks defect causes in descending order of frequency to show the vital few?

  1. Pareto chart
  2. Histogram
  3. Check sheet
  4. Scatter diagram
Answer and working

A. Pareto chart

A Pareto chart orders categories by size with a cumulative line, showing which few account for most of the problem. Scatter diagrams show relationships, histograms distributions and check sheets collect counts.

5 · Total quality management tools · medium

What does a scatter diagram of oven temperature against biscuit moisture show?

  1. The frequency distribution of biscuit moisture
  2. Whether the oven is in statistical control
  3. The ranking of defect causes by cost
  4. Whether the two variables appear related
Answer and working

D. Whether the two variables appear related

A scatter diagram plots pairs of values to reveal a possible relationship; it does not prove cause. Distribution needs a histogram, ranking a Pareto chart and control a control chart.

6 · ISO 9001 quality management system · medium

Which clause of ISO 9001:2015 contains internal audit and management review?

  1. Clause 5, leadership
  2. Clause 9, performance evaluation
  3. Clause 7, support
  4. Clause 10, improvement
Answer and working

B. Clause 9, performance evaluation

Clause 9 covers monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation, internal audit and management review. Clause 10 covers nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement.

7 · Statistical process control: control charts for variables and attributes · medium

An X̄-R chart for fill weight uses subgroups of 5, with grand mean 500.0 g and mean range 4.0 g (A₂ = 0.577). What are the X̄ chart control limits?

  1. 496.0 to 504.0 g
  2. 498.8 to 501.2 g
  3. 488.0 to 512.0 g
  4. 497.7 to 502.3 g
Answer and working

D. 497.7 to 502.3 g

Limits = X̄̄ ± A₂R̄ = 500.0 ± 0.577 × 4.0 = 500.0 ± 2.31, i.e. 497.7 to 502.3 g. 488 to 512 uses ±3R̄; 496 to 504 uses ±R̄; 498.8 to 501.2 uses ±0.3R̄.

8 · Process capability indices · hard

A filler must keep the mean at least 3σ above a 500 g minimum. If σ falls from 2.0 g to 1.0 g, by how much can the target be lowered?

  1. 6 g
  2. 3 g
  3. 1 g
  4. 2 g
Answer and working

B. 3 g

Target = 500 + 3σ: 506 g at σ = 2.0, 503 g at σ = 1.0, a saving of 3 g per pack. 1 g is the change in σ; 6 g is the old safety margin; 2 g is the old σ.

What does a certificate of analysis from a supplier provide?

  1. A guarantee that every unit is free of defects
  2. The legal standard for the product
  3. Accreditation of the supplier's laboratory
  4. The supplier's test results for a specific lot
Answer and working

D. The supplier's test results for a specific lot

A CoA reports results for a lot against the specification; receiving plants verify CoAs periodically by their own testing. It is not a guarantee, an accreditation or a standard.

How is NIR spectroscopy used for online measurement of moisture and fat?

  1. It counts the fat globules in the product under a microscope
  2. Through chemometric calibrations
  3. It needs no calibration because the spectra are absolute values
  4. It measures moisture directly from the weight loss of the sample
Answer and working

B. Through chemometric calibrations

NIR absorbance at many wavelengths is related to composition through calibrations (for example partial least squares) built against reference analyses; calibrations must be validated and maintained. It is not a drying or microscopy method.
