Under which Indian law does the Central Zoo Authority regulate zoos?

  1. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960
  2. Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984
  3. Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
  4. Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
Answer and working

D. Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972

The Central Zoo Authority was created under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, which also governs capture and movement of wild animals. The PCA Act covers cruelty generally, the IVC Act covers the profession, and the Environment (Protection) Act covers pollution and waste.

Which post-mortem judgement fits a carcass with one localised, healed bruise on the hindquarter and no other abnormality?

  1. Total condemnation, since any lesion makes the whole carcass unfit for human consumption
  2. Partial condemnation: trim the affected tissue and pass the remainder
  3. Conditional approval after the carcass is boiled before release
  4. Return the carcass to the farmer to be used as pet food at home
Answer and working

B. Partial condemnation: trim the affected tissue and pass the remainder

A localised lesion in an otherwise normal carcass is trimmed and the rest passed. Total condemnation and heat treatment are for generalised or specified conditions, and returning carcasses for informal use is not a recognised judgement.

Which test is used to confirm that milk has been adequately pasteurised?

  1. Methylene blue reduction test
  2. Alkaline phosphatase test
  3. California mastitis test
  4. Clot-on-boiling test
Answer and working

B. Alkaline phosphatase test

Alkaline phosphatase is destroyed by a heat treatment slightly greater than that needed to kill the target pathogens, so a negative result confirms adequate pasteurisation. Clot-on-boiling checks acidity, methylene blue reduction estimates bacterial load in raw milk, and CMT screens for mastitis.

At the reception dock, a sample of raw milk decolourises methylene blue in 30 minutes while most samples take several hours. What does this indicate?

  1. Complete absence of bacteria in the sample tested at the dock
  2. Added water lowering the milk's density
  3. An unusually high fat content and good quality
  4. A high bacterial load and poor hygienic quality
Answer and working

D. A high bacterial load and poor hygienic quality

Bacteria use up oxygen and reduce the dye; the faster it decolourises, the greater the bacterial load. Fast reduction does not measure fat or added water, and sterile milk would keep its colour longest.

A broiler house sold 9,600 birds at an average 2.2 kg live weight, and the flock ate 36,960 kg of feed. Using total live weight sold, what is the feed conversion ratio?

  1. 3.85
  2. 1.68
  3. 0.57
  4. 1.75
Answer and working

D. 1.75

Live weight sold = 9,600 × 2.2 = 21,120 kg. FCR = 36,960 ÷ 21,120 = 1.75. 1.68 uses 10,000 birds placed instead of those sold, 0.57 inverts the ratio, and 3.85 divides feed by birds alone.

Where and when is Marek's disease vaccine given to commercial chicks?

  1. At the hatchery, at day old or in ovo
  2. In the feed during the grower phase of rearing
  3. In drinking water at 3 weeks of age
  4. By eye drop at the point of lay
Answer and working

A. At the hatchery, at day old or in ovo

Marek's vaccine must reach the chick before field exposure, so it is given by injection at day old or in ovo at the hatchery. Later water, eye-drop or feed routes are too late and are not used for this vaccine.

Which practice is correct when giving a live vaccine to broilers through drinking water?

  1. Withdraw water briefly beforehand and use chlorine-free water with a milk powder stabiliser
  2. Add the vaccine to the chlorinated main supply so that the virus is kept free of contamination
  3. Give the vaccine in a large volume over two days so that every bird drinks it more than once
  4. Reconstitute the vaccine the evening before so it is ready when the lights come on next morning
Answer and working

A. Withdraw water briefly beforehand and use chlorine-free water with a milk powder stabiliser

Brief water withdrawal makes birds drink promptly; chlorine and disinfectants inactivate live vaccine, so water is chlorine-free and stabilised with skim milk powder. Vaccine is reconstituted just before use and the volume is set so it is drunk within a short period.

A broiler flock of 12,000 chicks placed had 420 deaths by the end of the cycle. What is the cumulative mortality?

  1. 96.5%
  2. 0.35%
  3. 3.5%
  4. 35%
Answer and working

C. 3.5%

Mortality = 420 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 3.5%. 35% and 0.35% are decimal slips, and 96.5% is liveability, not mortality.

A buffalo died suddenly overnight; the owner reports dark, tarry blood oozing from the nostrils and anus, and the carcass shows no rigor mortis. What should the field intern do?

  1. Advise burial in the village pond to keep the carcass away from dogs
  2. Not open the carcass; collect a peripheral blood smear and report suspected anthrax
  3. Open the abdomen to examine the spleen and confirm the diagnosis before reporting
  4. Advise the owner to skin the carcass quickly so the hide can still be sold
Answer and working

B. Not open the carcass; collect a peripheral blood smear and report suspected anthrax

Sudden death, unclotted blood from natural openings and absent rigor point to anthrax. The carcass is not opened, as air exposure leads to sporulation; a blood smear is taken and the case reported. Skinning or disposal in water spreads spores.

Under the Animal Birth Control Rules 2023 in India, what happens to a street dog after sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination?

  1. It is released back to the same area from which it was captured
  2. It is released in a forest area away from human settlements
  3. It is put up for sale to licensed breeders in the same district
  4. It is moved to a shelter outside the city for the rest of its life
Answer and working

A. It is released back to the same area from which it was captured

The ABC Rules require dogs to be returned to the locality where they were caught, so a stable, vaccinated, sterilised population holds the territory. Relocation to shelters, forests or breeders is not the method.
