Tractor & Automotive Engines (IC Engines) in ASRB NET

How tractor engines work and how their performance is measured — the single most reliably examined farm-power topic.

Our 17 ASRB NET questions in this subject: 4 easy, 11 medium, 2 hard, across 12 units.

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

These 10 were written to ASRB NET and are not shown on any other exam's page.

Question 1 · medium

Valve overlap in a four-stroke engine occurs

  1. near BDC at the end of suction, when both valves are closed
  2. during the power stroke, when the exhaust valve opens early
  3. near exhaust TDC, with both valves open
  4. near TDC at the end of compression, when both valves are closed for the start of combustion
Answer and working

C. near exhaust TDC, with both valves open

The inlet opens before TDC and the exhaust closes after TDC, so both are open around exhaust TDC. At compression TDC both valves are closed; the early exhaust opening near BDC is exhaust lead, not overlap.

Question 2 · medium

In a helix-controlled in-line injection pump, the quantity of fuel injected per stroke is changed by

  1. rotating the plunger with the control rack, which changes the effective stroke
  2. changing the plunger's total lift by fitting a camshaft with a different cam profile
  3. changing the speed of the pump camshaft
  4. adjusting the injector spring pressure
Answer and working

A. rotating the plunger with the control rack, which changes the effective stroke

The rack rotates the plunger so the helix uncovers the spill port earlier or later, varying effective stroke. Total plunger lift is fixed by the cam; injector opening pressure does not meter quantity.

Question 3 · medium

Pre-ignition in an SI engine differs from detonation in that pre-ignition is

  1. self-ignition of the end gas after the spark
  2. failure of the charge to ignite at all
  3. combustion continuing into the exhaust stroke
  4. ignition of the charge by a hot surface before the spark occurs
Answer and working

D. ignition of the charge by a hot surface before the spark occurs

Pre-ignition is started by a glowing deposit, valve or plug before the spark. Detonation (knock) is autoignition of end gas after normal spark ignition.

Question 4 · medium

The wastegate on a turbocharger

  1. cools the compressed air before it enters the cylinders, which can raise charge density
  2. prevents dust from entering the compressor
  3. returns excess fuel to the tank
  4. lets some exhaust bypass the turbine to limit boost pressure
Answer and working

D. lets some exhaust bypass the turbine to limit boost pressure

At high speed and load the wastegate opens so the turbine does not overspeed and boost stays within limits. Cooling the charge is the intercooler's job.

Question 5 · medium

In an alternator, the AC generated in the stator is converted to DC for the battery by

  1. the voltage regulator
  2. a cut-out relay
  3. the commutator and brushes
  4. a diode bridge
Answer and working

D. a diode bridge

Diodes rectify the three-phase output; the regulator controls field current to hold system voltage. A commutator belongs to a dynamo; a cut-out relay was used with dynamos.

Question 6 · easy

Biodiesel (fatty-acid methyl ester) is produced from vegetable oil by

  1. catalytic cracking, giving petrol as a by-product
  2. transesterification with methanol
  3. fermentation, giving carbon dioxide as a by-product
  4. hydrolysis with water, giving ethanol and fatty acids as by-products
Answer and working

B. transesterification with methanol

Triglycerides react with methanol over a catalyst to form methyl esters and glycerol. Fermentation makes ethanol.

Question 7 · medium

Which dynamometer can both absorb an engine's power and drive (motor) the engine for a friction test?

  1. An eddy-current dynamometer
  2. A hydraulic (water-brake) dynamometer
  3. A rope-brake dynamometer
  4. An electric (DC swinging-field or AC) dynamometer
Answer and working

D. An electric (DC swinging-field or AC) dynamometer

Electric machines work as generators to absorb power and as motors to drive the engine. Eddy-current, hydraulic and friction brakes can only absorb.

Question 8 · easy

The OECD Standard Code that covers official testing of agricultural tractor performance (PTO power, fuel consumption, drawbar, hydraulic lift) is

  1. Code 5
  2. Code 4
  3. Code 10
  4. Code 2
Answer and working

D. Code 2

Code 2 is the performance test code. Other codes cover noise at the driver's position (Code 5) and protective structures such as ROPS and FOPS (Codes 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10).

Question 9 · easy

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on a modern tractor diesel reduces

  1. NOx, using an aqueous urea solution that forms ammonia
  2. particulate matter, by trapping soot in a filter
  3. CO and HC, by oxidation over platinum
  4. CO2, by capturing it in the catalyst
Answer and working

A. NOx, using an aqueous urea solution that forms ammonia

Urea (about 32.5% in water) decomposes to ammonia, which reduces NOx to nitrogen and water over the SCR catalyst. Soot is trapped by the DPF; CO and HC are oxidised by the DOC.

Question 10 · medium

Which new kind of limit did the EU Stage V rules for non-road engines add for most power bands, beyond the mass of particulate matter?

  1. A limit on CO2 emissions per hectare (carbon intensity)
  2. A limit on engine noise at the operator's ear
  3. A limit on fuel sulphur in the engine oil
  4. A limit on particle number (count)
Answer and working

D. A limit on particle number (count)

Stage V (Regulation (EU) 2016/1628) introduced particle-number limits for most power ranges, which in practice requires a wall-flow particulate filter. Check the regulation for the exact bands and values.

A study plan for Tractor & Automotive Engines (IC Engines) in ASRB NET

This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.

  1. First, the heavy units (53% of the 17 questions): Emission norms (3, 18%); Diesel fuel system: injection pump and injector (2, 12%); Engine testing (2, 12%); Governing (2, 12%).

Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.

  2. Then the middle band: Air intake and turbocharging (1, 6%); Combustion and knock (1, 6%); Engine classification and terminology (1, 6%); Engine components (1, 6%).

Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.

  3. Then the lighter units: Fuel properties (1, 6%); Ignition and electrical system: battery, starter and alternator (1, 6%); Lubrication system and lubricants (1, 6%); Two-stroke and four-stroke engines (1, 6%).

Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.

  4. Leave time for the hard ones: Governing (1 hard of 2), Emission norms (1 hard of 3).

Come back to these after a first pass, untimed, and read every explanation, including for the options you rejected.

  5. Bank the easy marks: Fuel properties (1 easy of 1); Engine testing (1 easy of 2).

Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.

  6. Finish timed. Sit the subject as a timed set without notes, mark it, and send each wrong answer back to its unit above.
