10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Mouldboard plough · easy

The size of a mouldboard plough is expressed as

  1. width of cut of each bottom and the number of bottoms
  2. the diameter of the mouldboard
  3. the depth of ploughing
  4. the tractor power it needs
Answer and working

A. width of cut of each bottom and the number of bottoms

A plough is specified by the width of cut per bottom and number of bottoms, which fix total width. Depth is a setting and power depends on soil.

2 · Chisel plough and subsoiler · easy

A chisel plough differs from a mouldboard plough mainly in that it

  1. inverts the slice completely
  2. needs PTO drive
  3. shatters and loosens soil without inverting it
  4. is used only for puddling
Answer and working

C. shatters and loosens soil without inverting it

Chisel shanks loosen and shatter soil and leave residue on the surface, which is why they suit conservation tillage. Mouldboards invert; rotary tillers need PTO drive.

3 · Harrows, cultivators and rotavators · easy

Which disc harrow has one front gang and one rear gang placed to one side of the tractor centre line?

  1. Single-action disc harrow
  2. Offset disc harrow
  3. Double-action tandem disc harrow
  4. Vertical-disc plough
Answer and working

B. Offset disc harrow

The offset harrow's two gangs work in opposite directions and are offset laterally, letting it work under tree branches. Single-action has two gangs end to end; tandem has four gangs.

4 · Harrows, cultivators and rotavators · medium

The bakhar used in the black soils of central India is best described as a

  1. blade harrow that cuts beneath the surface with a horizontal blade
  2. spike-tooth harrow with pegs that stir the surface
  3. disc harrow
  4. rotary puddler with bladed rotors on a horizontal shaft for wet fields
Answer and working

A. blade harrow that cuts beneath the surface with a horizontal blade

The bakhar is a traditional blade harrow; its horizontal blade cuts under the crust and kills weeds.

5 · Furrow geometry · medium

On a mounted mouldboard plough, the width of cut of the front bottom is adjusted mainly by

  1. rotating or shifting the cross-shaft of the linkage
  2. lengthening or shortening the top link to tilt the whole frame
  3. changing tyre pressure
  4. changing PTO speed
Answer and working

A. rotating or shifting the cross-shaft of the linkage

Moving the cross-shaft changes the front bottom's lateral position relative to the tractor wheel and hence its width. The top link sets fore-and-aft level.

6 · Paddy and vegetable transplanters · easy

Most mechanical rice transplanters require seedlings raised as

  1. wet-bed nursery seedlings pulled and bundled
  2. a mat nursery
  3. direct-seeded plants
  4. plug seedlings in deep cells only
Answer and working

B. a mat nursery

The picking fork cuts blocks from a mat, so seedlings must be grown densely on a thin soil layer forming a mat. The roots interlock so the mat holds together when the fork cuts it.

7 · Fertiliser distributors · easy

A spinning-disc fertiliser broadcaster distributes granules by

  1. dropping them through openings across the full width
  2. throwing them with vanes on a rotating disc
  3. blowing them through a boom
  4. injecting them with knives
Answer and working

B. throwing them with vanes on a rotating disc

Centrifugal broadcasters throw granules from vaned discs. Drop spreaders use openings along the hopper and pneumatic spreaders use a boom.

8 · Field capacity and field efficiency · easy

Field efficiency is defined as

  1. effective field capacity divided by theoretical field capacity
  2. theoretical divided by effective field capacity
  3. drawbar power divided by engine power
  4. area covered divided by fuel used
Answer and working

A. effective field capacity divided by theoretical field capacity

FE = EFC/TFC, always at most 100 %. Power ratios describe tractive or transmission efficiency, not field efficiency.

9 · Field capacity and field efficiency · medium

Which change would most improve field efficiency of a tillage operation?

  1. Increasing forward speed alone
  2. Working longer runs with fewer turns in larger, regular fields
  3. Using a wider implement with more overlap between adjacent passes
  4. Adding more ballast
Answer and working

B. Working longer runs with fewer turns in larger, regular fields

Turning time is a main loss; long runs in regular fields reduce turns per hectare. Wider implements with more overlap lower effective width, and speed changes TFC more than efficiency.

10 · Field capacity and field efficiency · easy

How many hours will a machine with an effective field capacity of 0.6 ha/h take to cover 60 ha?

  1. 36 h
  2. 10 h
  3. 100 h
  4. 0.01 h
Answer and working

C. 100 h

Time = area/EFC = 60/0.6 = 100 h. 36 comes from multiplying the numbers. 10 h reads 0.6 ha/h as 6 ha/h; 0.01 h inverts the ratio.
