1 · Canal operation · easy

Under warabandi, how is each farmer's turn on a watercourse fixed?

  1. Equal hours for every farmer on the watercourse, whatever the size of each holding
  2. Whenever the farmer applies, in the order in which applications are received at the canal office
  3. A fixed time on a fixed day of a weekly cycle, in proportion to the farmer's landholding
  4. A fixed volume per hectare measured at the field inlet, however long the delivery takes
Answer and working

C. A fixed time on a fixed day of a weekly cycle, in proportion to the farmer's landholding

Warabandi gives the whole outlet flow for a time proportional to area, at a fixed day and hour in a 7-day cycle. Application-based allotment is closer to Maharashtra's shejpali; equal hours ignores holding size.

2 · Canal operation · medium

Under warabandi on a 7-day cycle, how many hours does a farmer with 6 ha in a 120 ha outlet command receive, ignoring conveyance-time adjustments?

  1. 1.2 hours
  2. 20.0 hours
  3. 7.0 hours
  4. 8.4 hours
Answer and working

D. 8.4 hours

Turn = 168 h × 6/120 = 8.4 h. 1.2 h uses 24 h instead of 168 h; 7.0 assumes one hour per day; 20.0 divides 120 by 6.

3 · Flood control measures · easy

Which measure reduces flood damage to a house without changing the flood itself?

  1. Raising the plinth above the expected flood level
  2. Widening and deepening the river channel nearby
  3. Raising the crest of the levee along the river
  4. Building a detention basin on a tributary upstream
Answer and working

A. Raising the plinth above the expected flood level

Flood proofing, such as raising plinths, protects property against a given flood. Detention, channel widening and levees all change the flood flow or level.

4 · Minor irrigation · easy

Under India's classification by culturable command area, a scheme with a CCA of 1,500 ha is

  1. a medium irrigation project
  2. a major irrigation project
  3. a minor irrigation project
  4. a command area development project
Answer and working

C. a minor irrigation project

India: minor below 2,000 ha CCA, medium 2,000–10,000 ha, major above 10,000 ha. Command area development is a programme, not a size class.

5 · Minor irrigation · hard

A tubewell yields 30 L/s and runs 10 h a day. Peak crop demand is 6 mm/day and application efficiency is 75%. What area can it serve at peak?

  1. 5.4 ha
  2. 13.5 ha
  3. 1.35 ha
  4. 18.0 ha
Answer and working

B. 13.5 ha

Daily volume = 0.030 × 36,000 = 1,080 m³; effective = 810 m³; area = 810 ÷ 0.006 = 135,000 m² = 13.5 ha. 18.0 ignores efficiency; 5.4 uses 4 h; 1.35 slips a decimal.

6 · Minor irrigation · easy

What is the function of the sluice in an irrigation tank?

  1. To bring water into the tank from the catchment or upper tank
  2. To release controlled amounts of stored water to the command
  3. To drain the foreshore so that it can be cultivated after the rains
  4. To pass flood water safely when the tank is full to its crest
Answer and working

B. To release controlled amounts of stored water to the command

The sluice is the controlled outlet to the command. Flood passing is the surplus weir; supply is the supply channel.

7 · Water users' associations and participatory irrigation management · medium

Which Indian state passed the Farmers' Management of Irrigation Systems Act in 1997, an early state law creating water users' associations?

  1. Himachal Pradesh
  2. Andhra Pradesh
  3. Punjab
  4. Rajasthan
Answer and working

B. Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh's 1997 Act created WUAs across its irrigation commands and was followed by other states' laws. The other states passed their own laws at different times.
