Question 1 · easy

The pull a trained draught animal can sustain for several hours is commonly taken as about what fraction of its body weight?

  1. About 30–40%
  2. About 10–14%
  3. About 1–2%
  4. About 50–60%
Answer and working

B. About 10–14%

Textbooks commonly take sustained pull as about one tenth of body weight (range about 10–14%), varying with breed, condition and training. Far higher pulls are possible only briefly. About 1–2% is far below a working pull; 30–60% can be held only for short bursts.

Question 2 · easy

Which harness lets a horse exert its full pull without pressing on its windpipe?

  1. A neck yoke resting in front of the hump
  2. A collar bearing on the shoulders
  3. A horn (head) yoke
  4. A nose rope
Answer and working

B. A collar bearing on the shoulders

A properly fitted collar spreads the load over the shoulders. Neck yokes suit humped zebu cattle, and horn yokes are for cattle; a nose rope is for control, not pulling.

Question 3 · hard

A development project finds that bullocks in a district work fewer days than expected and many have neck sores. Which intervention addresses the most likely cause directly?

  1. Replace hard narrow yokes with broad, smooth, padded yokes fitted to the animals
  2. Buy heavier ploughs so that each pass does more work and fewer days are needed
  3. Increase the working day to eight hours so that the lost working days are made up
  4. Replace bullocks with buffaloes for summer work
Answer and working

A. Replace hard narrow yokes with broad, smooth, padded yokes fitted to the animals

Poorly fitting yokes cause sores, pain and lost working days; well-fitted padded yokes spread the load. Heavier ploughs and longer days add to the injury, and buffaloes tolerate summer heat worse than zebu bullocks.

Question 4 · easy

A power tiller is best described as:

  1. A four-wheel tractor above 50 kW with a three-point linkage and PTO
  2. A stationary engine driving a thresher
  3. A tracked crawler usually used for land clearing and heavy earthmoving
  4. A single-axle walking tractor
Answer and working

D. A single-axle walking tractor

A power tiller (two-wheel tractor) has one axle and is steered by handles; it tills, puddles paddy fields and pulls trailers. It is the typical small mechanical power unit in paddy areas of Asia. It is usually fitted with a rotary tiller.

Question 5 · medium

A diesel pump set that delivered its rated output on the plains is installed at a high-altitude farm and gives noticeably less power. The main reason is:

  1. Diesel has a lower calorific value when burned at high altitude
  2. Water boils at a lower temperature so cooling fails
  3. Thinner air admits less oxygen per cycle
  4. Lower atmospheric pressure raises compression ratio
Answer and working

C. Thinner air admits less oxygen per cycle

At altitude the air is less dense, so less oxygen enters the cylinder and less fuel can be burned; engines are derated for altitude and high temperature. The fuel's calorific value does not change, and compression ratio is fixed by geometry.

Question 6 · easy

A farm meter records 250 kWh. What is this energy in megajoules?

  1. 69.4 MJ
  2. 900 MJ
  3. 250 MJ
  4. 900,000 MJ
Answer and working

B. 900 MJ

1 kWh = 3.6 MJ, so 250 kWh = 250 × 3.6 = 900 MJ. Dividing by 3.6 gives 69.4; 900,000 is the value in kJ, not MJ.

Question 7 · easy

The solar constant, the mean solar irradiance on a surface normal to the sun's rays at the top of the atmosphere, is about:

  1. 1,000 W/m²
  2. 136 W/m²
  3. 13,670 W/m²
  4. 1,361–1,367 W/m²
Answer and working

D. 1,361–1,367 W/m²

The solar constant is about 1361–1367 W/m² depending on the measurement series. About 1000 W/m² is typical clear-sky irradiance at the ground, used as the STC value. 136 W/m² is a factor-of-ten slip.

Question 8 · easy

Compared with open sun drying, a well-designed solar cabinet dryer mainly:

  1. Works equally well at night without storage
  2. Needs no ventilation because the moisture driven off stays inside and is reabsorbed
  3. Protects the crop from dust, insects and rain and dries it faster at higher temperature
  4. Uses concentrating mirrors to reach over 300 °C, drying the crop in a matter of minutes
Answer and working

C. Protects the crop from dust, insects and rain and dries it faster at higher temperature

The transparent cover heats the air and shields the product, so drying is faster and cleaner. Airflow must remove moisture; a simple dryer does not work at night and does not use concentration.

Question 9 · medium

A 12 V, 150 Ah battery in a solar farm-lighting system may be discharged only to 50% depth of discharge. How much energy is usable?

  1. 0.90 kWh
  2. 1.80 kWh
  3. 0.075 kWh
  4. 900 kWh
Answer and working

A. 0.90 kWh

Stored energy = 12 × 150 = 1800 Wh; usable at 50% DoD = 900 Wh = 0.90 kWh. 1.80 kWh ignores the DoD limit; 900 kWh treats Wh as kWh. 0.075 kWh forgets the 12 V (150 Ah × 0.5 read as 75 Wh).

Question 10 · medium

Most family-size biogas digesters operate in which temperature range, and what happens in winter?

  1. Mesophilic, about 30–40 °C; gas production falls sharply in cold weather
  2. Thermophilic, about 50–60 °C; gas production rises in winter
  3. Psychrophilic, below 10 °C; gas production is unaffected by the changing season
  4. Any temperature; methane bacteria are insensitive to temperature
Answer and working

A. Mesophilic, about 30–40 °C; gas production falls sharply in cold weather

Unheated farm digesters run in the mesophilic range; methane-forming bacteria slow down in cold weather, so yield drops and longer retention or insulation is needed. Thermophilic digestion is faster but harder to control.

A study plan for Farm Power Sources in Nepal Engineering Council Registration Exam

This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.

  1. First, the heavy units (50% of the 16 questions): Animal draught power and harnessing (3, 19%); Solar power as a farm power source (3, 19%); Biomass and biofuels as power sources (2, 13%).

Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.

  2. Then the middle band: Electrical power on the farm (2, 13%); Human power and its limits (2, 13%); Mechanical power: engines and tractors (2, 13%).

Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.

  3. Then the lighter units: Wind power as a farm power source (2, 13%).

Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.

  4. Leave time for the hard ones: Animal draught power and harnessing (1 hard of 3).

Come back to these after a first pass, untimed, and read every explanation, including for the options you rejected.

  5. Bank the easy marks: Electrical power on the farm (2 easy of 2); Human power and its limits (2 easy of 2).

Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.

  6. Finish timed. Sit the subject as a timed set without notes, mark it, and send each wrong answer back to its unit above.
