10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Boilers: types, fittings, mountings and efficiency · medium

A boiler makes 2,000 kg/h of steam (enthalpy 2,770 kJ/kg) from feed water at 335 kJ/kg, burning 140 kg/h of oil with a gross calorific value of 42,000 kJ/kg. What is its efficiency by the direct method?

  1. 82.8%
  2. 94.2%
  3. 106.1%
  4. 91.5%
Answer and working

A. 82.8%

Efficiency = 2,000 × (2,770 − 335) ÷ (140 × 42,000) = 82.8%. The others ignore feed enthalpy, subtract the feed temperature instead of its enthalpy, or invert the ratio.

2 · Steam distribution and condensate recovery · medium

Condensate with a sensible heat of 721 kJ/kg is released to atmospheric pressure (sensible heat 419 kJ/kg, latent heat 2,257 kJ/kg). What fraction flashes to steam?

  1. 18.6%
  2. 41.9%
  3. 13.4%
  4. 11.3%
Answer and working

C. 13.4%

Flash fraction = (721 − 419) ÷ 2,257 = 13.4%. The others divide by the condensate enthalpy, use the wrong numerator, or divide by total steam enthalpy.

3 · Heat recovery and cogeneration · easy

A heat pump delivers 300 kW of heat using 75 kW of electricity. What is its heating COP?

  1. 3.0
  2. 4.0
  3. 5.0
  4. 0.25
Answer and working

B. 4.0

Heating COP = 300 ÷ 75 = 4.0. 3.0 would be the cooling COP (225 ÷ 75).

4 · Boilers: types, fittings, mountings and efficiency · easy

In which boiler do hot combustion gases pass through tubes surrounded by water?

  1. Fire-tube boiler
  2. Electrode boiler
  3. Water-tube boiler with steam and mud drums
  4. Thermic fluid heater with oil coils
Answer and working

A. Fire-tube boiler

Shell or fire-tube boilers carry gases in tubes inside a water-filled shell.

5 · Steam distribution and condensate recovery · medium

Why is steam often distributed at higher pressure and reduced near the point of use?

  1. High-pressure steam carries more latent heat per kilogram to the user
  2. Pressure-reducing valves superheat it for food
  3. Mains are smaller; low-pressure steam has more latent heat
  4. It avoids steam traps
Answer and working

C. Mains are smaller; low-pressure steam has more latent heat

Higher pressure means denser steam and smaller pipes; latent heat per kilogram rises as pressure falls.

6 · Water supply, treatment and quality for dairy use · medium

Why are chlorides in process water a concern in dairies?

  1. They pit and crack stainless steel
  2. They lower water density
  3. They feed lactic acid bacteria
  4. They make water hard and form scale
Answer and working

A. They pit and crack stainless steel

Chloride attacks the passive layer, causing pitting and stress corrosion cracking, worse when hot.

7 · Compressed air systems · medium

Where does most of the electrical input to an air compressor end up?

  1. As noise
  2. As heat
  3. As vibration of the frame
  4. As stored air energy
Answer and working

B. As heat

Most input becomes heat, which can be recovered for water or space heating.

8 · Electrical supply and power factor · medium

How is a low power factor usually corrected?

  1. Capacitor banks
  2. Larger cables
  3. Raising the supply voltage
  4. Adding motors
Answer and working

A. Capacitor banks

Capacitors supply reactive power locally, cutting kVA drawn from the grid.

9 · Energy audits · medium

In a liquid milk plant, which is often the largest electrical user?

  1. Gate barriers
  2. Office lighting and computers
  3. Packing machine heaters
  4. Refrigeration
Answer and working

D. Refrigeration

Refrigeration for chilling and cold storage commonly leads electrical use.

10 · Renewable energy in dairy plants: solar thermal, biogas · medium

What is the typical methane content of biogas from dairy effluent?

  1. 90–99%
  2. 10–20%
  3. 30–40%
  4. 60–70%
Answer and working

D. 60–70%

The rest is mainly CO₂ with traces of H₂S and water vapour.
