10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Boilers: types, fittings, mountings and efficiency · medium

A boiler makes 2,000 kg/h of steam (enthalpy 2,770 kJ/kg) from feed water at 335 kJ/kg, burning 140 kg/h of oil with a gross calorific value of 42,000 kJ/kg. What is its efficiency by the direct method?

  1. 82.8%
  2. 94.2%
  3. 106.1%
  4. 91.5%
Answer and working

A. 82.8%

Efficiency = 2,000 × (2,770 − 335) ÷ (140 × 42,000) = 82.8%. The others ignore feed enthalpy, subtract the feed temperature instead of its enthalpy, or invert the ratio.

2 · Steam distribution and condensate recovery · medium

Condensate with a sensible heat of 721 kJ/kg is released to atmospheric pressure (sensible heat 419 kJ/kg, latent heat 2,257 kJ/kg). What fraction flashes to steam?

  1. 18.6%
  2. 41.9%
  3. 13.4%
  4. 11.3%
Answer and working

C. 13.4%

Flash fraction = (721 − 419) ÷ 2,257 = 13.4%. The others divide by the condensate enthalpy, use the wrong numerator, or divide by total steam enthalpy.

3 · Electrical supply and power factor · hard

What line current does a 100 kW three-phase load draw at 415 V and a power factor of 0.85?

  1. 283 A
  2. 139 A
  3. 164 A
  4. 118 A
Answer and working

C. 164 A

I = P ÷ (√3 × V × PF) = 100,000 ÷ (1.732 × 415 × 0.85) = 164 A. The others omit √3, omit the PF, or multiply by it.

4 · Renewable energy in dairy plants: solar thermal, biogas · hard

Biogas from the reactor above (700 m³/day of methane) is 65% methane. What volume of biogas is produced?

  1. 1,077 m³/day
  2. 700 m³/day
  3. 2,000 m³/day
  4. 455 m³/day
Answer and working

A. 1,077 m³/day

Biogas = 700 ÷ 0.65 = 1,077 m³/day. 455 multiplies by the methane share; 2,000 divides by the methane yield.

What happens when a burner is tuned to too little excess air?

  1. Less CO in flue gas
  2. A larger dry flue gas loss from heating surplus air
  3. Higher feed-water hardness
  4. Incomplete combustion and soot
Answer and working

D. Incomplete combustion and soot

Below the minimum safe excess air, fuel is left unburnt as CO and soot, which also fouls tubes; too much air raises flue gas loss.

6 · Steam distribution and condensate recovery · medium

Why is steam often distributed at higher pressure and reduced near the point of use?

  1. High-pressure steam carries more latent heat per kilogram to the user
  2. Pressure-reducing valves superheat it for food
  3. Mains are smaller; low-pressure steam has more latent heat
  4. It avoids steam traps
Answer and working

C. Mains are smaller; low-pressure steam has more latent heat

Higher pressure means denser steam and smaller pipes; latent heat per kilogram rises as pressure falls.

7 · Compressed air systems · medium

Which dryer is needed when air lines pass through freezing areas?

  1. No dryer
  2. Desiccant dryer
  3. Refrigerated dryer with a +3 °C dew point
  4. Aftercooler only
Answer and working

B. Desiccant dryer

Desiccant dryers reach dew points well below freezing; refrigerated dryers stay above it.

8 · Compressed air systems · medium

Where does most of the electrical input to an air compressor end up?

  1. As noise
  2. As heat
  3. As vibration of the frame
  4. As stored air energy
Answer and working

B. As heat

Most input becomes heat, which can be recovered for water or space heating.

9 · Energy audits · medium

Which international standard provides a framework for energy management systems?

  1. ISO 9001
  2. ISO 50001
  3. ISO 14001
  4. ISO 8573-1
Answer and working

B. ISO 50001

ISO 50001 covers energy policy, baselines, performance indicators and improvement.

10 · Boiler and pressure-vessel safety rules · medium

At what pressure are boiler safety valves set?

  1. At any pressure the operator chooses on the day
  2. Well above design pressure
  3. At or below the design pressure, sealed
  4. At atmospheric pressure
Answer and working

C. At or below the design pressure, sealed

Valves are set not above the allowed working pressure and sealed against tampering.
