A loan officer has a 40-page tender document and needs only the date by which bids must be submitted. The reading technique to use is
B. scanning
Scanning is a quick search for a specific item such as a date or figure. Skimming gets the general idea; intensive reading is slow and complete; extensive reading is wide reading for general understanding.
Which of the following is a feature of a good précis?
C. It is written in the précis writer's own words in the third person and omits examples and illustrations
A précis is a connected, condensed version in one's own words, usually third person and reported speech, without examples, quotations, figures of speech or the writer's own opinion. Notes, added opinions and retained examples are all common faults.
Choose the grammatically correct sentence.
C. Neither the manager nor the field officers were present at the farmers' meeting.
With neither...nor the verb agrees with the nearer subject; 'field officers' is plural, so 'were' is correct. 'Was' agrees with the farther subject; 'neither...or' breaks the correlative pair; 'neither of the manager nor' is an ungrammatical blend.
Choose the sentence without a dangling modifier.
D. Having checked the seed samples, the inspector signed the report.
The opening phrase 'Having checked the seed samples' must be followed by the person who checked them. Only the version with 'the inspector' as subject does this; in the others the report or the act of signing appears to have done the checking.
Choose the correct word: 'The new storage policy will ____ the cooperative's working capital needs.'
B. affect
'Affect' is the usual verb meaning to influence. 'Effect' is usually a noun (and as a verb means to bring about, which does not fit); 'afflict' and 'infect' mean to cause suffering or disease.
A rural bank must tell an FPO that its request for an additional working-capital limit has been declined. Following the indirect plan for bad news, the letter should usually
B. open with a relevant neutral buffer, explain the reasons, state the refusal once clearly, offer any alternative and close positively
The indirect plan softens bad news by explaining reasons before stating the decision, which is stated plainly once, followed by an alternative and a forward-looking close. Leaving the decision implied is unclear, a false promise is misleading, and leading with a list of faults ignores the reader's reaction. Some readers and cultures prefer directness, so the plan is a judgement.
A sales manager wants to send a product update to 300 dealers without revealing their e-mail addresses to one another. The addresses should go in the
D. Bcc field
Blind carbon copy (Bcc) hides recipients from each other, protecting addresses on a large external list. Cc and To show every address to all recipients, and the subject line is not for addresses.
Which order of the stages in Rogers' innovation-decision process is correct?
C. Knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, confirmation
Rogers' innovation-decision process is knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, confirmation. Awareness-interest-evaluation-trial-adoption is the older adoption-process model of earlier rural sociologists, here with an added stage; the other two put the steps in the wrong order.
An extension officer sprays a bio-pesticide on a plot in front of farmers, showing step by step how to mix and apply it. This is a
A. method demonstration
A method demonstration shows how to do a practice. A result demonstration shows the outcome of a practice on a plot over a season; a field day brings farmers to see a set of activities; a farm and home visit is individual contact.
A report says: 'The FPO's share of members' sales rose from 20% last year to 25% this year.' Which description is accurate?
C. A rise of 5 percentage points, which is a 25% increase in the share
25 - 20 = 5 percentage points; relative change = 5 / 20 = 25%. Calling it a 5% rise confuses points with percent; 25 points confuses the relative change with the absolute one; dividing by the new value (5/25 = 20%) uses the wrong base.
This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.
Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.
Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.
Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.
Come back to these after a first pass, untimed, and read every explanation, including for the options you rejected.
Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.
