Question 1 · medium

A state research station has built the first working unit of a new self-propelled paddy transplanter and wants to know whether the design is sound enough to be taken to production. The appropriate test is a

  1. prototype or initial test, with extended field running to expose design faults
  2. batch test, drawing the unit at random from a production line for comparison
  3. commercial test, so that the published report qualifies it for subsidy at once
  4. rollover protective structure test, because every new machine must pass one first
Answer and working

A. prototype or initial test, with extended field running to expose design faults

A prototype (initial) test examines a new design before production, usually including extended field running. A batch test needs an existing production line and an earlier commercial test; a commercial test is for a production model; a ROPS test applies to tractors and similar machines with protective structures, not as a general first step.

Question 2 · hard

Under a machinery subsidy scheme that pays only for tested models, a dealer submits a valid commercial test report for a tractor model. The tractor being sold has a different engine and a different transmission from the one described in the report. The correct action is to

  1. accept the report, because a commercial test report covers every variant sold under the same model name
  2. accept the report if the dealer signs a declaration that the new engine gives equal or greater power
  3. reject it for this variant, since a report covers only the specification tested
  4. accept the report if the tractor passes a short drive on the dealer's yard in front of an officer
Answer and working

C. reject it for this variant, since a report covers only the specification tested

A test report describes one specification: engine, transmission, tyres and masses are listed so that the reader can check that the machine in hand is the one tested. A different engine and transmission is a different machine for test purposes; a declaration or a yard drive does not replace a test.

Question 3 · easy

A tractor's specific fuel consumption is measured at full load and at several part loads. The general pattern a test report shows is that SFC

  1. is highest at full load and falls steadily as the load falls
  2. is lowest near full load and rises steeply as the load falls
  3. stays constant at every load because the governor holds speed
  4. is lowest at no load because the engine does almost no work
Answer and working

B. is lowest near full load and rises steeply as the load falls

Friction and pumping losses stay roughly the same while useful output falls, so fuel per kWh rises sharply at light load. This is why the code reports part-load fuel use and why an oversized tractor on light work wastes fuel. At no load the SFC is not defined at all, because the power is zero.

Question 4 · easy

A tractor has separate left and right brake pedals. Before travelling on a public road, the pedals should be latched together because

  1. the latch adds hydraulic assistance that can only work on the road
  2. braking one side alone at speed can swing the tractor sideways
  3. an unlatched pedal disengages the differential lock automatically
  4. road rules require the parking brake to be built into the latch
Answer and working

B. braking one side alone at speed can swing the tractor sideways

Independent pedals are for tight turning in the field. At road speed a one-sided brake application yaws the tractor and can overturn it, so the pedals are latched. The latch does not add assistance, does not affect the differential lock, and is not the parking brake.

Question 5 · easy

Noise at the operator's ear in tractor tests is reported in dB(A). The A-weighting is used because it

  1. removes all engine noise so that only the transmission is measured
  2. mimics how the ear hears low and very high frequencies less well
  3. doubles the reading so that small differences become easier to see
  4. measures vibration at the seat as well as sound at the ear position
Answer and working

B. mimics how the ear hears low and very high frequencies less well

The A-weighting filter reduces low and very high frequencies roughly as the human ear does, so dB(A) relates to hearing damage risk. It does not remove engine noise, does not double readings, and has nothing to do with seat vibration.

Question 6 · easy

In rollover protective structure testing, the clearance zone or deflection-limiting volume (DLV) is

  1. the space around a seated operator that the structure must not enter
  2. the area of ground that the tractor sweeps when it turns at full lock
  3. the volume of steel the structure must contain to pass the static test
  4. the distance the tractor slides on its side before it comes to rest
Answer and working

A. the space around a seated operator that the structure must not enter

The clearance zone (OECD) or DLV is a box approximating a seated operator, fixed to the seat; if any part of the structure enters it during the test, the structure fails. It is not a turning area, a steel volume or a sliding distance.

Question 7 · easy

A tractor's ROPS was bent in an overturn but no one was hurt. The correct action is to

  1. replace the structure with one certified for that tractor model
  2. straighten it in a press and re-weld any cracks that have appeared
  3. heat it and bend it back so that it is stronger than before the overturn
  4. add a welded bracing tube so that the bent section is fully supported
Answer and working

A. replace the structure with one certified for that tractor model

A ROPS absorbs energy by yielding, and once yielded it will not perform as tested; welding, drilling or straightening also voids its certification. It must be replaced with a certified structure.

Question 8 · easy

In a tractor drawbar test, the pull exerted by the tractor is measured by

  1. a pressure gauge on the tractor's own hydraulic lift
  2. the tachometer reading of the tractor engine speed
  3. the fuel meter reading multiplied by travel speed
  4. a load cell in the hitch connection to the load car
Answer and working

D. a load cell in the hitch connection to the load car

A load cell (strain-gauge force transducer) between the drawbar and the load car measures pull directly. The hydraulic gauge reads lift circuit pressure, the tachometer reads engine speed, and fuel times speed is not a force.

Question 9 · medium

In a field test of a sprayer, water-sensitive paper cards are placed in the crop canopy. They are used to assess

  1. the flow rate of each nozzle on the spray boom in L/min
  2. the chemical concentration of the tank mix in g/L
  3. spray coverage and the droplet number per cm² on the target
  4. the pump's delivery pressure at the regulator valve
Answer and working

C. spray coverage and the droplet number per cm² on the target

The yellow cards turn blue where droplets land, showing coverage and the number of droplets per cm² at each position. Nozzle flow is measured by collecting output over time, concentration by analysis, and pressure by a gauge.

Question 10 · easy

Before using any number from a tractor test report, the first things a reader should check are

  1. the colour of the tractor, the dealer's location and the price paid at sale
  2. the name of the operator who drove the test and the weather on the test day
  3. the number of pages in the report and whether it is printed in colour
  4. the code and edition, and the tested ballast, tyres and PTO speed
Answer and working

D. the code and edition, and the tested ballast, tyres and PTO speed

Every result depends on the code used and on the configuration: masses, tyres, ballast, PTO speed and test surface. Operator names, price and report layout do not affect the meaning of the numbers; atmospheric conditions are recorded in the report and matter, but only alongside the code and configuration.

A study plan for Farm Machinery Testing, Evaluation & Standards in Rajasthan PSC

This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.

  1. First, the heavy units (56% of the 18 questions): ROPS and FOPS tests (3, 17%); Types of tests: commercial, batch, confidential and prototype (3, 17%); Brake and turning tests (2, 11%); Hydraulic lift test (2, 11%).

Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.

  2. Then the middle band: PTO performance test (2, 11%); Tests of sprayers and harvesting equipment (2, 11%); Interpreting test reports (1, 6%); Laboratory and field tests of tillage and sowing equipment (1, 6%).

Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.

  3. Then the lighter units: Noise at the operator's ear (1, 6%); Test instrumentation: dynamometers and fuel meters (1, 6%).

Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.

  4. Leave time for the hard ones: Types of tests: commercial, batch, confidential and prototype (1 hard of 3).

Come back to these after a first pass, untimed, and read every explanation, including for the options you rejected.

  5. Bank the easy marks: Brake and turning tests (2 easy of 2); Hydraulic lift test (2 easy of 2).

Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.

  6. Finish timed. Sit the subject as a timed set without notes, mark it, and send each wrong answer back to its unit above.
