What this subject covers

How blood, heart, lungs and kidneys keep the internal environment stable in mammals and birds. Acid-base and fluid balance here underpin fluid therapy in the clinic.

In the exams: ICAR AICE-JRF core group 08; ICAR AIEEA-PG 14 (Physiology); PRC 10%; Nepal NLEV 6; China basic paper 13; AVE Paper 1 at least 5

1 · Blood composition and function · easy

In birds, the granulocyte that performs the role of the mammalian neutrophil is the:

  1. Heterophil
  2. Basophil
  3. Thrombocyte
  4. Azurophil
Answer and working

A. Heterophil

Avian heterophils contain rod-shaped eosinophilic granules and are the main phagocytes in acute inflammation. Thrombocytes are nucleated cells that take the place of platelets.

A dog ate an anticoagulant rodenticide 48 hours ago and shows no bleeding yet. Which test is expected to prolong first?

  1. Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)
  2. Platelet count
  3. Prothrombin time (PT)
  4. Buccal mucosal bleeding time
Answer and working

C. Prothrombin time (PT)

The rodenticide blocks vitamin K recycling, and factor VII, measured by the PT, has the shortest half-life, so PT lengthens first; aPTT follows as IX, X and II fall. Bleeding time and platelet count test primary haemostasis, which is not affected.

An inherited deficiency of coagulation factor XI is recognised in which breed of cattle?

  1. Jersey
  2. Holstein
  3. Brahman
  4. Hereford
Answer and working

B. Holstein

Factor XI deficiency is a recognised inherited defect in Holstein cattle and can cause prolonged bleeding after surgery or injection. It prolongs the aPTT.

4 · Cardiac cycle · easy

A resting horse has a heart rate of 36 beats per minute and a stroke volume of 900 mL. What is its cardiac output?

  1. 32.4 L/min
  2. 25 L/min
  3. 32,400 L/min
  4. 3.24 L/min
Answer and working

A. 32.4 L/min

CO = HR x SV = 36 x 0.9 L = 32.4 L/min. Leaving SV in mL gives 32,400, a unit slip; 25 comes from dividing SV by HR; 3.24 comes from converting 900 mL to 0.09 L instead of 0.9 L.

5 · Cardiac cycle · easy

The first heart sound is produced mainly by:

  1. Closure of AV valves
  2. Closure of the aortic and pulmonary valves
  3. Rapid ventricular filling
  4. Atrial contraction (atrial kick)
Answer and working

A. Closure of AV valves

S1 marks the start of ventricular systole when the mitral and tricuspid valves close. S2 is semilunar valve closure, S3 rapid filling and S4 atrial contraction. AV stands for atrioventricular.

Cyanide poisoning produces which type of hypoxia?

  1. Stagnant hypoxia
  2. Hypoxaemic hypoxia
  3. Histotoxic hypoxia
  4. Anaemic hypoxia
Answer and working

C. Histotoxic hypoxia

Cyanide blocks cytochrome oxidase, so cells cannot use the oxygen delivered; venous blood stays bright red because oxygen is not extracted. Arterial PO2 and content are normal.

7 · Renal function · medium

Which statement about the avian kidney is correct?

  1. Nitrogen is excreted mainly as urea
  2. Most nephrons lack a loop of Henle, and urine is modified further in the cloaca and colon
  3. All nephrons have long loops of Henle, allowing urine many times more concentrated than plasma
  4. Urine is stored in a urinary bladder before voiding
Answer and working

B. Most nephrons lack a loop of Henle, and urine is modified further in the cloaca and colon

Birds have mainly reptilian-type loopless nephrons, excrete uric acid, have no bladder and can concentrate urine only to about twice plasma osmolality; urine refluxes into the coprodeum and colon for water reabsorption.

8 · Osmoregulation · medium

Thirsty calves that drink large volumes of water very quickly may develop red urine. This is due to:

  1. Leptospirosis
  2. Intravascular haemolysis as plasma osmolality falls rapidly after excess water intake
  3. Bracken fern poisoning
  4. Haematuria from bladder uroliths dislodged by the sudden large increase in urine flow
Answer and working

B. Intravascular haemolysis as plasma osmolality falls rapidly after excess water intake

Rapid absorption of a large water load lowers plasma osmolality; red cells swell and lyse, causing haemoglobinuria, and brain oedema may follow. Access to water should be restored gradually after deprivation.
