In hot tropical climates, the long axis of a cattle shed is usually oriented:

  1. North-south
  2. North-east to south-west
  3. East-west
  4. Orientation does not matter
Answer and working

C. East-west

An east-west long axis lets the morning and evening sun fall on the short end walls, so the roof shades the floor for most of the day. North-south orientation exposes the long sides to low-angle sun.

Using Shaeffer's formula, estimate the body weight of a cow with body length 60 inches and heart girth 70 inches.

  1. About 1,400 lb
  2. About 980 lb
  3. About 14 lb
  4. About 196 lb
Answer and working

B. About 980 lb

Weight (lb) = L x G2 / 300 = 60 x 4,900 / 300 = 294,000 / 300 = 980 lb (about 445 kg). 1,400 lb comes from 70 x 60 / 3, a garbled formula; 14 lb forgets to square the girth (60 x 70 / 300); 196 lb divides by 1,500 instead of 300.

  1. Freemartin
  2. Anoestrous cow
  3. Nymphomaniac

D. Repeat breeder

Immediately after birth, the navel of a calf is dipped in tincture of iodine to:

  1. Stop haemorrhage from the umbilical artery
  2. Prevent navel infection and joint ill
  3. Speed up closure of the ductus arteriosus
  4. Provide iodine to prevent goitre
Answer and working

B. Prevent navel infection and joint ill

Disinfecting and drying the navel reduces omphalitis and the joint ill that can follow. Tying, not iodine, controls haemorrhage; iodine on the navel is not a nutritional source.

7 · Clean milk production · easy

The recommended method of hand milking a cow with normal-sized teats is:

  1. Knuckling (thumb-bent)
  2. Full-hand (fisting)
  3. Stripping
  4. Squeezing with two fingers only
Answer and working

B. Full-hand (fisting)

In full-hand milking the teat is held in the whole hand and milk squeezed out by closing the fingers from the top. Knuckling bends the thumb against the teat and damages it; stripping is kept for small teats or the last milk.
