Applied Agriculture Library

Grow Guides · Plain Words, Step by Step

The Applied Agriculture Library is Laisha's home for its grow guides: stage-by-stage cultivation guides for sixty-three crops, written in short plain sentences and numbered steps.

It is written for somebody who needs to grow food this season and may have had very little formal schooling. That is a deliberate separation from the Living Sciences Library, which is written at a university register — burying practical growing steps behind academic subject names works against the person who needs them most.

Every figure carries its source. A guide that says to apply a quantity at a stage, without saying where that came from, is asking a farmer to spend money on somebody's word.

This content used to exist only inside chat, answered when somebody happened to ask for a specific crop, with no way to browse the set or see what was actually covered. A farmer deciding between two crops could not compare them.

The guides are readable on the open web as well as in the app, at laisha.ai/guides, with no sign-in — the first two thousand words of every crop, which is genuinely most of the practical answer.

It is honest about the limit that matters: a guide is written for a crop, not for your field. Soil, water and weather still decide, and the guide says at each stage what it assumed.

How to use Applied Agriculture Library

What it is. Grow guides for sixty-three crops: what the plant needs, how long from planting to food, growing it stage by stage, harvest and storage, what a normal harvest is worth — plus a plant identification quiz, and a printable guide to take into the field.

When to open it. Before you plant something you have not grown before, and again at each stage while you are growing it.

Have ready.

Step by step.

  1. Find the crop. Start with 'the short answer' if you want the decision rather than the education.
  2. Read 'read this first' before committing land to it.
  3. Work through 'growing it, stage by stage' as the season progresses rather than all at once.
  4. Check 'how long from planting to food' against your season before you sow. This is the question that most often rules a crop out.
  5. Look at 'what a normal harvest is worth' before you plant, not after.
  6. Download the printable guide — it is the one designed to be carried, not read on a screen.
  7. Try the leaf identification quiz.

What it will not do. It is general guidance for a crop, not advice for your field. It does not know your soil, your water, your variety or your market, and it states no chemical dose.

Crop
Which of the sixty-three guides to open. How to choose: Search by name. If yours is not there, a related crop in the same family will share much of the practice. If it is wrong: Nothing.
The printable guide
The version designed to be printed and kept. How to choose: Print it if you are going to be following it outdoors. A phone in a field in sunlight is a poor way to read anything. If it is wrong: Nothing.

A worked example

Considering a crop you have not grown before.

What goes in:

What comes out:

Read 'how long from planting to food' and 'what a normal harvest is worth' before anything else. Between them they answer whether the crop fits your season and whether it is worth your land, and a guide read in that order saves the whole season where the answer is no.

Questions people ask about Applied Agriculture Library

How long does it take from planting to harvest?

Each guide answers it for its crop, and it is the first thing to check — a crop whose duration does not fit your season cannot be managed into fitting it, and no amount of good practice afterwards recovers that. It is the question that most often rules a crop out before anything else matters.

How do I know whether a crop is worth growing?

Two numbers, in this order: how long it occupies the land, and what a normal harvest of it is worth. Then check there is a buyer within reach — Market Prices shows real prices in real markets with distances. A good yield with no buyer nearby is not a good crop.

How many crops are covered?

Sixty-three, each with what the plant needs, the time to harvest, stage-by-stage growing, harvest and storage, and what a normal harvest is worth — plus a printable version meant to be carried into the field rather than read on a phone in sunlight.
